So, I pretty much PPH my stylist, he's super awesome. I love the color and cuts he does on my hair. I've been going to him for a few years now.
However...........I've been thinking about dyeing my hair at home, and just going to him for cuts. This is a purely financial decision. It costs $115 including a 20% tip, every time I get my hair done, which is about every 8 weeks. Realistically, I need to do it every 6 weeks thanks to my roots, but I don't want to spend the money that often. Cuts alone are $35, plus a 20% tip, so $42 total.
It's not that I can't afford it, it's just that I know that I should be saving that money instead, since I'm not saving as much as I really should be right now. However, I don't want to hurt his feelings, and I know he needs the revenue as well, since the economy is down and so his income is reduced as well.
What would you do?
Re: Hair Related
pimp him out? Give out his business cards, rec him to F&F, post up about how much you lurve him on kudzu.com, yelp.com and angieslist.com type websites.
Its the best I've got.
I don't dye my hair @ the salon all that often but I ain't skeered of some roots.
Its just too expensive to do it all that often and I can't really get the color right @ home either. I try to do a 1-step every 3-4mo and highlights every 6 mo
Call me Kat =^..^=
See, I just do a plain chocolate brown color, nothing fancy. My roots are blond (yes, I'm a natural blond who dyes her hair dark, sue me), so they stand out quite a bit, and if I dyed my hair at home I could do it more often so I would feel less self conscious about the root situation.
I also love the sense of pampering of getting my hair done. I show up on saturday with my cup of coffee, and sit down and we talk our heads off for 3 hours. It's great. But, I really should be saving the money, but I don't wanna! Neither will I cut off cable or internet to help subsidize my hair, I really need those things too.
So basically I'm a spoiled brat.
I can't really do this due to the contrast in colors. I would have dark ends and blond roots, and it would just look dreadful.

Oh, I see! Well, that means I would have to go blonde, which I really don't want. Brunette hair is just so much more flattering to me.
This is true.
Thanks everyone!
I'm not sure that I really have advice as I am in a similar situation.
I'm naturally a dark brunette. But I was highlighting for a long time (first blond then I switched to red.) The money and time strains got to be too much so I decided to go back to my natural color. I went in and had my hair colored to match my natural shade etc. It stayed for awhile but now my highlights are starting to show through and it appears that I have roots again. It's not terribly noticeable but it's annoying. I'm debating the box color thing too but I'm afraid of messing it up and I also know my stylist really needs the money...
I guess my point is...going natural might not be the answer for you either esp. if it's not the color you want. You might want to post this on the F&B board as there are a few hair stylists that post there. I wish I could be of more help!

What's wrong with natural blondes?
j/k
Oh yeah, definitely using a semi perm, I learned not to do permanent color.
In two weeks I will let you come check out my roots.
Maybe that's something to consider for you, going to the school it's much cheaper. My friend actually may come over next weekend and color my hair. She is only charging me whatever it costs for the color plus a tip. If all is well, I can put you in touch with her.
No thanks, but I appreciate the thought. The whole point is not to pay someone to do it, so even a "tip" amps up the cost too much for me. If someone is going to drive over to my house to do it, I would feel like I would need to give them at least a $25-$30 tip, and I can do it myself for nothing.
noelle, take pictures...i'm doubtful myself
