Negotiating salary questions.....

I have an interview at the end of this month for a Product Specialist job north of Boston at a chemical company. This is my first post-PhD job and I'm not sure how much money to ask for. They advertised 52k-60k. I would like 60K + some money (1-2K) for relocation (I currently live in Upstate, NY). Is that too much? I know someone who had their offer rescinded for asking for too high a salary. WDYT??

I don't think so! They advertised 60k, and I would think 1-2k over that wouldn't break the bank. I usually ask for 5k more than they offer me and although I sometimes don't get the whole 5k, I've always gotten something and I've never gotten the offer rescinded. If you asked for. Good luck!

Does your PhD program publish the median starting salary of past graduates?

You can check salary.com to back up what you are asking for/ confirm that it is reasonable , and I've also used glassdoor.com to see what people for that company are making (depending on how many reviews have been posted.)

I think someone who has their PhD should have no problem making 60k + in Boston (I'm from upstate NY too and have a bunch of contacts in Boston)

I don't know anything about PhD money matters, but I can tell you I lived in Boston for 5 years. $60k is not ridiculous up there for a job that requires you to be that highly qualified. In fact, depending on the job, I know someone with no degree that makes close to that, because she worked her way up through the company. Plus, the Boston area is a very lovely place to live, but VERY VERY expensive to live in.

It's not that expensive here. Geesh. You can live on $60k and even rent an apartment in a fun area. Lots of people do it, trust me.
