My lil sis is recently engaged and getting married next spring. I want to throw her an engagement party -- very small, family/best man only, roughly sixteen people. The 16 does include 3 grandparents.
She and her FI are big into trucks and such; he's a diesel mechanic and a country boy and she's helping him rebuild engines and feed the cows. They're forever in their baseball caps and nothing fancy would work.
My question is, what should I do for their engagement party? It'll probably be in early October, and I think I may just fall back to dinner somewhere since noone has a house to accomodate a bonfire or cook out type thing. (I know he's a country boy, but his mom is incredibly, well, controlling and over protective, so I don't want to plan an event at their house/land.) Any ideas?
Re: Engagement Party?
What about a local park? We have tons of park areas where we could (legally) bring a bbq, use park bench tables and have a great time. Some of our parks even have charcoal bbq grills permanently installed near the eating tables.
Or a community center? Ours here in town lets residents rent it out hourly and includes tables, chairs and setup for about $50-100/hour depending upon facility, day, etc.
I was thinking a local park too, we have lots of state parks with pavilions and grills you can use.

I like the park ideas, too, I'm just nervous about a park in early October. And since the area around here is where the Kansas Speedway, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Cabela's, and all that crap has recently gone into, nothing that's family owned and good home cooking has survived, sadly enough.
Thanks for the ideas ladies!
