Book Club: Moloka'i final check in

Hi ladies, sorry I'm two days late - I had to finish the book!  It was a great read, I wish I'd had time to zip through a little quicker but I loved it.

Here are some discussion questions:

1.  In what ways is Ruth like her biological mother?  How do you envision her relationship with Rachel evolving and maturing in the twenty years between 1948 and 1970?

2.  What was your reaction to Kenji's death?

3.  How has this shaped or changed your initial perception of Moloka'i's label of "Leper Colony"?

4.  Who was your favorite character overall?  Why?

5.  Did you like the book?  Would you recommend it to others?

I feel like our book club is petering out a bit....is it?  Are we moving on to another book?

  • 1.  In what ways is Ruth like her biological mother?  How do you envision her relationship with Rachel evolving and maturing in the twenty years between 1948 and 1970?

Hmm... maybe I should've re-read it before the final discussion!  I can't remember much about Ruth. :(

    2.  What was your reaction to Kenji's death?

I was totally heartbroken and angry.  I loved his character and I didn't want Rachel to have to be alone again.  And the way he died... it just made me so mad!  Why can't life be sunshine and rainbows? :(

    3.  How has this shaped or changed your initial perception of Moloka'i's label of "Leper Colony"?

I'm ashamed to say, I had no idea Molokai had a colony on it until I read the book.  It took me a while to realize it was a real place.  The colony, not the island... I'm not that dim!

    4.  Who was your favorite character overall?  Why?

Definitely Rachel, she's one of my favorite characters of all time.  She's brave, adventurous, loving, optimistic... I just loved her spirit.  She had plenty of reasons to turn away from life, grow cynical or depressed, and she never did.  But she still felt like a REAL person... like if Melanie from Gone With The Wind was less "perfect" all the time.

    5.  Did you like the book?  Would you recommend it to others?

I loved it and recommended it to several others, including my sister who read it all in one day!  She's normally a fast reader, but she loved it so much she couldn't put it down.

I feel like our book club is petering out a bit....is it?  Are we moving on to another book?

It does feel like that!  Everyone must be like me: I like to read and the recommendations are fun, but the discussion part is harder!

  • Eeee...I was on the waitlist at the library and they finally contacted me to let me know the book was available.  I'm looking forward to reading it then coming back to check out these old posts to see what others thought!

  • 1.  In what ways is Ruth like her biological mother?  How do you envision her relationship with Rachel evolving and maturing in the twenty years between 1948 and 1970?

Well, they both had to deal with being exiled for reasons out of their control.  Personality-wise, they both seem very loving, are passionate, and have a good sense of humor.

    2.  What was your reaction to Kenji's death?

I was very angry.  It was such a shame that he had to die such a senseless death.  At least if it was the leprosy, Rachel would have ben able to make peace with it much better and sooner.  To have him taken from her in such a violent way was horrible.

    3.  How has this shaped or changed your initial perception of Moloka'i's label of "Leper Colony"?

I knew one existed, but didn't know much more about it than that.  After reading this book, (I had read this book two years ago), I tried to convince MH to include Molokai on our honeymoon because I was so fascinated with it!  That didn't fly with him, but someday I'd like to visit.

    4.  Who was your favorite character overall?  Why?

Rachel, of course!  She was so real!  I felt like I actually knew her, and would want to know her.  Although, I really like Sister Catherine throughout the book.  I identified with her struggles with her own religion, one that she had devoted her life to.  And I thought that her strength was amazing.  I know I couldn't have lived her life, watching death all around on a daily basis.

    5.  Did you like the book?  Would you recommend it to others?

Absolutely!  I have recommended it, as well as "Honolulu" to many of my friends.

I feel like our book club is petering out a bit....is it?  Are we moving on to another book?

It kind of does feel like that a little bit.  For me, I have this little guy now, and will be returning to work next month.  I love to read, and really want to participate, but cannot guarantee my consistent participation once I go back to work.  :(

  • I haven't quite finished, so I've skimmed past this all really fast so I don't read any spoilers lol! But I'll check in once I'm done. Stick out tongue

I did see the last question though - and yeah, I agree, it does feel like that. I think we're having The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time next, but after that...not sure if the momentum will keep going. And as much as I enjoy this, I'll freely admit that I'll probably have a problem finding time to participate once I return to work mid-Oct. Sad
