Declining an offer....

I've decided to decline a job offer for a couple of reasons.....

1) it's not exactly what I want to do.

2) it's a mandatory 50 hour work week.

3) the commute would be 70 miles roundtrip (on top of a 10 hour day = me being a mess)

4) having to work 2 weekends a month and 2 overnights a month

I'm so nervous to tell the recruiter. Ugh.

Re: Declining an offer....

  • I would focus on #1 and keep it cordial.  "The opportunity sounded great but I am more interested in doing xyz."  Or do you currently have a job?  You could just say you've decided to stay.

  • I would just tell them that you decided to go with another opportunity at this time. I wouldn't worry about it too much... I'm sure they hear it often. However, if it's a recruiter that you will be working with in the future (and you are still looking for a job), I would tell them you don't think it's a good fit, and you would like to keep looking. Good luck!
  • Yeahk, ditto.  Don't overthink it.  Keep it short and simple.  They are used to people declining offers .  Trust me.

  • You could just say something like, "Thank you for the offer, however I have decided to pursue other options at this time". I'm sure the recruiter will understand. Your reasons are all valid.
