Hi ladies.
I accepted a job offer two days ago. I start in three weeks.
My husband and son will be about 5-6 weeks behind.
My job is right downtown. I'm looking for a short-term furnished place until our stuff comes and we know where we want to live.
I have looked on Craig's List, the Star-Advertiser and VRBO.com
any other suggestions?
Until DH gets a job we're on a VERY low budget and I'm worried about balancing our budget and staying in nice/safe area. If there are any areas you would say to unequivocally stay away from please let me know.
Thanks for the help. I'll probably have a lot of questions over the next few months.
ETA- I thought of one already. What bank would you rec? Does anyone have true free checking? Lots of ATM locations?
Re: self relocating to Oahu. job starts in three weeks.
I don't live in Oahu (a lot of us just got married in HI and don't actually live there), but I wanted to say welcome to the board!
Super cute sig photo, btw.
welcome! i've seen you on the mm board
what is your budget for housing? i work downtown too and refuse to commute. we live by the ilikai/hilton area, which i love since i walk or ride by bike to work. there are a lot of furnished rentals in my area...price wise, maybe not so cheap. if you let me know what you are looking for monthly rental expense, i can point in you the right direction.
banks. there are zero mainland banks here. i chose first hawaiian because it's across the street from our condo. my h works for bank of hawaii. i think they suck cuz they have lots of fees and their website is jurassic. lots of small credit unions too. some of the big players are: first hawaiian, bank of hawaii, central pacific, american savings, territoral. i still use my mainland banks but depo checks to my local bank here.
i moved here two years ago so definitely let me know if you have more questions.

Also a got-married-in-HI-but-don't-live-there girl and wanted to say aloha and welcome! Congrats on the new job!
One of our girls, MrsZiz, has a furnished condo on Oahu that she rents out...perhaps she'll be able to help you?!

Ditto!!
Husky- YGM.
Thanks for the aloha ladies.
Welcome to the board and congrats on the new job!
There are a few apartment buildings around downtown that might be convenient for you. Executive Center, Kukui Plaza, Harbor Square. What kind of budget do you have in mind? Housing here is generally pretty pricey, but if you're lucky you can find a hidden gem.
For banks, I have American Savings. Hawaii banks are a little behind, but they recently started offering truly free checking accounts. I think the one at American Savings only requires that you open your account with $25. I like them because their branches are open later than many of the other banks.
