Carpet cleaning - musty smell!

Our dog was sick a week ago and vomited on the carpet in the basement.  We borrowed my parent's steam cleaner and cleaned the spots up.  Our basement started to smell a little musty after that.  Then we used the steam cleaner on the remainder of the carpet in the basement living room a few days later.

Yesterday the whole basement started to smell musty and disgusting.  The carpet is completely dried now, but I cannot figure out how to get rid of the smell.  Any suggestions?  Because the candles that I'm burning and only masking it.

Is there padding under the carpet? That might not have fully dried.  I'd steam it again and set up some fans for at least 24 hours, if not 48.

This. Or get a dehumidifier. A musty smell means moisture is lingering somewhere.

  • Once you've re-washed it, you should dry it fully and completely before putting heavy stuff back on the carpet as well, Sometimes the mustyness comes from spots under furniture that don't dry.

If you still have a lingering smell Set up fans or dehumidifiers, also you can deodorize your carpet with baking soda if there is some smell that just won't quit.
