Favorite nice (but not too expensive) restaurants?

H and I need to schedule some double dates and he thinks we need to class it up a bit. Although I'm happy with Santa Rita or Asia Cafe, he wants to do something a little nicer. Our special occasion restaurant is Eddie V's, I'm thinking a step below that. We love Moonshine and East Side Cafe. We went to Vespaio several years back, but it looks outrageous now! What else do you guys suggest?

Bonus if it's north/central. Drinks

Re: Favorite nice (but not too expensive) restaurants?

  • Asti, South Congress Cafe, and Uchicko are some of our favorite fancier places. Uchicko can be on the more expensive side depending on what you order. We tend to not eat as much meat when we are there, and can get out pretty cheaply.

  • Eastside and Moonshine are two of my favorites, so as far as I'm concerned, you can't go wrong there. Some other places I like: North at the Domain, Vino Vino, Eastside Showroom, the Good Knight, and Braise. Also, Fino is delicious for brunch, but if you want to do dinner on the cheap, sit in the lounge, order a cocktail and get three or four small plates to share between the group. I always find that really filling and it's fun.

  • I was going to recommend North and Glorias at Domain, Cheesecake Factory and Z Tejas in Arboretum, Trulucks is nice but a little bit more $$$. NXNW and Iron Cactus can be nice, too, at HH they are too crowded.

A little bit more to the north closer to Cedar Park Freda's is good, too.

  • I'm not really up on the new places, but a newish one is Max's Wine Dive.  Upscale comfort food and an awesome wine selection.

  • Also, Austin Restaurant Week is coming up soon, and would be a great time to try out some places in a less expensive way.
  • We had dinner last weekend at Justine's and it was very yummy. Not overly expensive but a good little french bistro.

  • quite a few people like vivo's - I'm not particularly a fan, but it's reasonably priced.  especially if you don't have alcohol, or limit to one of their pricey margs.  but one should kick your arse so it's probably all you need. ;)

  • Ditto the Asti rec, I also like Sienna and Daily Grill
  • Ranch 616, Taverna, Cantina Laredo, South Congress Cafe
  • Awesome y'all! That's a lot! I think Max's looks really cool, but I've heard a lot about Justine's too and want to try it. NXNW we've done to death and I got food poisoning at East Side Showroom...

I want to try Taverna too! Yea! Thanks for the ideas!

  • I second Gloria's at the Domain!
We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.
