Cat Urine In Carpet

My poor cat, who is getting up in years, had an accident on our carpet. Unfortunately it was there for a couple of hours before we discovered it. What is the best way to get rid of the urine smell in the carpet?

Re: Cat Urine In Carpet

  • I used to have cats and the spot around the litter box got really gross smelling. I used to use baking soda to deodorize the carpet there, it worked fairly well.
  • Use an enzyme cleaner. Nature's Miracle is a good one and is sold at both Petco and Petsmart.

You might want to schedule a visit to the vet to rule out any medical problems. An aging cat is prone to UTIs and kidney problems; both of which will cause improper elimination.

  • I'm a lurker on this board, but I have a kitty problem too.

There is a concoction that you can make with household items if you don't want to buy the nature's miracle for just one accident (although the NM does work very well, too.  The small bottle is about $7)

First soak up all the remaining urine from the soiled area

then pour a mixture of dishwashing detergent, white vinegar, baking soda and 3% peroxide.  (Test in a small, out of eyeshot place to make sure it doesn't discolor your carpet).

This will remove the scent completely.

  • If none of the pp's remedies work, you might have to rip up the carpeting, bleach the affected area(s), prime, paint/stain.  That's what we had to do when selling our house.
