What do you use to clean your hardwood floors?

We have new hardwood floors and I'm not sure what's the best way to clean them.

I should also mention that I'd prefer to buy  a product that's easy to use (since we have cleaning lady come during the month and I don't want there to be any room for error, if they needed to mix something, I'm worried they could mess it up!).

Re: What do you use to clean your hardwood floors?

  • We also have new hardwood floors, and I've found they are pretty low-maintenance (so far at least!). I use a Swiffer sweeper daily for general dust, etc. and once a week I use a steam mop (it sanitizes floors, is safe for hardwood and just uses distilled H20 so no chemicals needed). I know our floors will likely need to be recoated with polyurethane in the future, but for now they look good (we don't wear shoes in the house and don't have any pets or kids yet). Good luck maintaining your new floors!
  • I sweep and use a swiffer vacuum first, and then I use Method Wood Floor Cleaner (from target), but I have heard really good things about Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner so I am going to try that next.

  • I have been using Bona for years and love it!  They don't need it all the time- just a dusting will do for in between cleanings.

  • When I had my hardwood floors refinished the guy told me to only use hot water and a mop or if I feel the need to use "something" a little bit of white vinegar is ok.  I did buy a steam mop recently and I really like using that too.  It dries really fast.
  • I just use hot water, and every once in a while I use vinegar. We moved in a year ago, and they still look great.

ditto this, but be sure the mop is well ringed.

  • I fill the sink up with warm water and a teaspoon of murphys oil soap and dip my microfiber mop in there and then ring it out.

I like this product because its all natural and it has a very light natural scent compared to the strong chemically scents similiar to Swiffer.
