Is "Ghetto" a racially charged word?

I learned this a few years ago when it became a big deal at my job. I wasn't involved but I heard about it from both sides.
My opinion, it is what you make it. I mean the original word was about Jews 100 years ago. Somehow the word has become what it is now but I don't think it is a racist word. That being said I don't use it anymore because it upsets people, which I have no interest in doing over a word.
I avoid using the word myself unless I'm singing along with Elvis.
And why on earth would they want to go ahead with buying that house?

I never thought "ghetto" was a racially charged word until I used it on the knot.
Ghetto to me is based on the Jewish settlements in Poland and Germany post WW2. Guess I was wrong
