Anyone ever go to career counseling?
Hi Ladies,
I don't usually post over here but I'm having a "what do I want to do when I grow-up" crisis and unfortunately I am way too old for such things. Just wondering if anyone has ever gone through career counseling to evaluate their current job path and whether it's the right one and if its not to learn some strategies for making a switch? If you feel comfortable sharing your experience or have any suggestions, I would be very appreciative.
Thanks!
Re: Anyone ever go to career counseling?
Hi there! When I went through a career change I actually tapped into my career counseling center at my former university. Even though I was removed from the school for quite a few years, they still generally offer services for alumni. I also had a mentor in a faculty member who helped narrow down my interests.
There are certianly professional career counselors or mental health counselors who also specialize in career development since there are a lot of people with career ambiguity.
What I really found helpful was tlaking to friends and fmaily who were in different careers about what they did, what they liked, and what the didn't like. It really opened my eyes to some possibilities and ways I could use my strengths in different venues.
A lot of people also recommend the book "what color is your parachute" by Bolles There are quite a few additions. I didn't like the most recent version but enjoyed the previous editions.
