Suggestions on who to hire for help moving a piano?

My family is having an estate sale this weekend and I get my grandma's piano. My aunt and uncle will have it in a moving truck and are delivering it to my house next week. I'd like to hire someone to help lift it off the truck and bring it down to our lower level. Does anyone have someone they'd recommend? We live in the northern suburbs. Thanks so much!

  • No suggestions but U-Haul has a service where you can reserve moving help through their site.  They list the services they provide (piano moving, etc.) and have a bunch of user reviews.  I've always had good luck with those and they are usually very affordable.

  • My husband is a piano mover and I know there is a company that they deal with down there if they need an extra person.  (think 9 foot player grand they delivered down there)  they can weigh up to 2000 pounds.  Going up stairs, split foyers, anything extra can REALLY add up!

But depending on the piano and the supplies they have it can go very smoothly.  So let me get ahold of him and see who it is they recommend down there.  I know *most* companies don't like outsiders to move pianos because of the nature of the strings on the sound board.  But it's not always cost effective to do it that way either....:)

  • I've had two pianos moved in the last five years and both times I've had amazing success with Manny's Piano Movers. They are AWESOME. I had them pick up and drop off and place the piano and it was about $250. I'm not sure what it would cost just for an unload, but definitely call them.

  • I was JUST going to post that!  Brent was on a delivery in Minot and couldn't get back to me but he said Manny's also!
  • I have moved my piano like once a year for the past 8 years. I just get a piano dolly from Reddy Rents. And have a couple of guy friends move it for me.

  • My friend's husband works for a piano moving company, I'll find out the name for you!
  • I'd recommend hiring a company who specializes in moving pianos.  They have all the gear and know best how to maneuver them, where they can and can't grab for a hand hold, etc.  My folks have used Manny's before and were happy (they had to move their baby grand from one room to the other while the room it normally lives was re-carpeted, and then back again).  An estate company moved mine into my house.  Similar situation to you, my grandparents moved from a house to an apartment and I inherited the piano.  They did a good job but I can't recall who they had hired.
