so anybody else get stuck in an unfortunate location during the passing of this "tornado-like storm?" i was at the above-ground train station nearest my house, and was soaking wet from the time i got out of the train's doors and onto the platform. i watched garbage cans fly 20 or so feet up into the air after launching their contents all over the creation. oh yeah, and i had NO UMBRELLA. (not that it would've made a difference!)
crazy times!

Re: holy tornado, batman!
It was NUTS.
My job is about 10 minutes from the bus stop. I left when it looked super gloomy and there was some lightning but it wasn't raining wait. Midway through my walk, that's when it seriously started pouring. And holy HAIL, batman! I know what I saw and I know what hit me and that was bona fide hail. I was soaked in about a minute even under some shelter. I didn't want to keep waiting forever so once it wasn't so windy and hailing I walked the rest of the way. Of course when I got on the bus, it stopped raining.
But then it only got worse. My hour-long bus ride took almost two hours because there was standstill traffic in and near the Brooklyn tunnel - didn't know what happened until I read that three tractor trailers overturned on the Gowanus and everyone had to get off it.
I'm in dry clothes now but I still am shivering.

Last saturday I was supposed to have my hair cut, but when I got there I found out my stylist had no showed as she is pregnant, was having pains and had to go to the ER.
They rescheduled me with a different stylist for last night at 5:45 (luckily they weren't charging me for the haircut so at least I was happy about that). I decided to leave my coat at the office as when I was at lunch during the day it was warm and I didn't want to have to schlep it with me.
So I take the train to 14th street and 8th ave, get out and it is quickly obvious that rain is on the way as the skies are getting dark and tons of thunder is pounding, along with a few flashes of lightning. I think back to this morning on my way out of my apt when I glanced at my umbrella, glanced outside at the sunny weather, and decided I didn't need to bring my umbrella today - doh!
I scan the streets to see if there is a drugstore where I can get an umbrella, but all I see is a Banana Republic, I briefly thought about picking up a trench coat but then figured that was a stupid waste of $100.00 when I already have tons of trenches at home. I decide to just start walking quickly. If I wasn't preggo I would have ran but I don't feel safe doing that at this point.
So I get within 3 blocks when the heavens open up and being outside is basically the equivlent of jumping into a pool or lake. I duck into a bodega with some other people and try to wait it out for a little bit. I wait 10 minutes, can't wait any longer or I'd be late for my appointment. I thought about maybe just no showing or calling to reschedule but its been 6 months since I got my hair cut and it was getting kind of disgusting with the split ends.
So after it slows down a bit, I shield my eye makeup with a single piece of paper (lol it worked, no runny mascara) and walk as fast as possible the 3 blocks to my appointment. I make it without being scarily wet, though its obvious I was out without an umbrella.
I get my hair cut... I couldn't tell while I was there, but I actually do not like it and will have to get it fixed, UGH. And this is a place that charges over $100.00 so I'm mad (though I got it for free this time so I don't know if I can really complain)...
I hop on the train, only to realize 3 stops later that I'm going UPtown, and I have to switch and get off. By the time I get back to Brooklyn, I pick up some food and start walking to my apt, only to realize my keys are in my coat pocket that I left at the office. And DH is working late tonight and still at his office in Connecticut. F! Luckily my MIL lives above us and she let me in - phew, one good thing about living near the in laws (though mine are generally very giving and easy to deal with).
So yes, that is the story of my tornado afternoon/evening.
We were home, with the windows open, snoozing on the couch with the baby in her swing. All of a sudden, all hell broke loose. DH and I ran around shutting windows. I opened the bathroom door to shut the window and got SLAMMED in the face with rain.
Then our lights started flickering and finally went out. After it passed (like, in 5 minutes) we went outside and it looked like armageddon. Our neighbor's huge fir tree had snapped in half and fallen on a van, that had a man and his daughter sitting inside. Another neighbor didn't close his window quick enough and the entire glass panel ripped off and flew down the block. Trees were down everywhere, roads were totally inaccessible. It was crazy.
The police came through last night and chainsawed the fallen trees so we could at least drive down our block. ConEd fixed the power last night, and Time Warner repaired our cable today.
It's been an interesting three days with a newborn....
