too little time in the day

Today was a frustrating day!  There is just not enough time in the school day to get done everything I need to do.  Most days I love my job and I am always busy, but it is hard to get feedback that there is more to do and the impression is (from the principal and other teachers' perspectives) that I am not doing enough.  My responsibilities as a reading specialist include teaching small groups, testing kids to see if they qualify for learning support, creating and organizing a new book closet for thousands of titles of instructional books that needs to be inventoried, plus coordinating with teachers and attending parent meetings.

To top it off, we don't have a contract, so the union is forcing us to leave as soon as the school day is over.  I just felt very overwhelmed and under-recognized at work today.  I actually cried from my frustration to 2 of the other teachers and I hate doing that!

Thanks for listening, I just had to get this off my chest!

  • I'm so sorry you're feeling this way!!  I am a special ed teacher (resource) and go through the same kinds of things sometimes...overworked and under appreciated.  I haven't taken any groups yet bc we're working on testing and grouping and it's a nightmare...a teacher actually came up to me and asked why they even bother to pay me.

It's hard, but know that if it's bothering you this much, you care about your job and the kids and if you could be doing more, you definitely would.  Try to ignore it and know that you are doing the best you can.

  • mel - I am so sorry you are feeling this way. Try not to let it get you down. I agree with the pp that you need to focus on the good things you are doing and why it is that you love your job. I have the utmost respect for what you do because I don't think I have anywhere near the amount of patience that is required to work with those kids the way you do.

I am saying this to my DH all the time. He teaches 3rd grade...
