Zoey has been on prednisone for just over a week because of her itching. It seems to make her very thirsty, she has been drinking a ton. Because of this she has had 2 accidents in the middle of the night. I am pretty sure it's her and not Eldrick because they both have spots where they tend to go even since they were puppies, and this is her "area" both times. Last night our door was shut part way but not all the way and I really don't sleep sound these days so I don't know if she even tried to wake us up. So, while she's on the meds should I start limiting her water after a certain time at night? I feel really bad doing that, but I remember my parents doing the same when my brother was wetting the bed... if it's ok for people is it ok for dogs?
If she's up when I get up to pee in the middle of the night then I let her out, but both times I got up last night she was asleep and I even got up once and let Eldrick out and she didn't get up then.
Re: Question for pet people
Pred. definitely increases thirst!! I'd check with your vet to be sure, but I don't think it's wise to restrict her access to water. What I would do, is when you get up at night to pee, get her up too if she's not awake and let her out.
Either that, or possibly confine her to a tiled area where accidents are easy to clean up?
Hope she's feeling better soon!!!!
Thirst and increased hunger is a side effect of the meds. Keep in mind that just because it makes them feel more thirsty or hungry does not mean that their bodies require extra food or water.
You can absolutely limit water or completely remove it after a certain time to help reduce accidents. Just make sure your toilet lids are down as well.
Hopefully that should help.
Maybe start limiting her water at night - like after a certain time in the evening like @ 7:00pm - put the water dish up. I read somewhere that it's a good idea to do with pets to prevent nightly accidents. That way - you aren't limiting water the entire day - just before bed.
Or - if that isn't an option maybe get pee pads for her? That way if she can't get outside - then she'd at least have somewhere to go until you get up. Then you just throw the pad away. Might not be the greatest idea, but it's just a thought.
