This time of year

makes me really hate my ears.  Sounds silly, I know, but I have this problem that when the weather starts to turn cooler (I am talking anything below 20 degrees) I can't be outside for prolonged periods of time.  If I am then I get these really intensely painful ear aches, which cause me to never want to do any form of exercise outside.

My dh and I went bike riding the other day and it was maybe 15-20 degrees out.  By the end I was feeling like someone was stabbing at the part right behind my earlobes.  I don't know what else to do, other than wear a hat under my helmet - which can get pretty sweaty.  This happens in the spring as well, and my mom has the same problem so I am guessing it is genetic.  I just want to enjoy being outside because the weather is beautiful, but it just hurts too much.

Anyone else experience this?

  • I have never heard of this. I know people who have to careful when its windy out or they are prone to mild ear aches. But stabbing in the ear? Have you ever talked to your doctor about this? Maybe there is some way they can help.

  • I would def. speak with your Dr. hon.  It could be something that can be easily fixed. I hope you feel better soon.
  • I get that, too.  Even if I'm running with earbuds in, around the end of my run, my ears will hurt very badly.  I've always been this way.

  • I never thought to ask my doctor about it, because my mom has it too and I have always had it happen.  I just thought it was natural and something that I couldn't change, but I guess it couldn't hurt to ask next time I am there.

rxbeth, have you ever asked your doc about it?

  • I have asked my doctor about it but it was years ago when I still had my craptastic family doctor and he pretty much told me to stop whining.  Thing with me is that I have congenital hearing loss in both ears (more in left) so when I was getting the pain, I wanted it checked out because I didn't know if it would lead to more hearing loss and he was less than helpful.

I've just resigned myself to the fact that I'll get stabbing pain in my ears from time to time and that I'll need hearing aids in the next couple of years.  I'm kinda afraid to go to an audiologist at this point.  I've just learned to make do with a combo of lip reading, placing people on my right side and avoiding crowded places.  Sorry I can't help.

  • I used to get some pain in my ears whenever it was windy out or I was sailing - even in the summer.  You can find these head wrap/tube scarf things at outdoor equipment stores (MEC, Bushtukah, North Face maybe?) that are really thin jersey material.  If you wrap it around twice it would fit snug to my head - also acted like a hair band.  I couldn't hear anything while sailing but they worked and I imagine they would be comfortable under a helmet.

This isn't the brand I bought but it's the same idea:

    I hope that works...

  •  They look like they would work great - thanks for the tip!
