Passport Name Change

Anyone do this yet?  It looks like if yours is over a year old it is going to be $60 and you have to mail your old one back.  Really?  That is so expensive.  Or am I reading the info wrong?  I was going to hold off, but we are going to the Bahamas in the spring and I wanted to get it done sooner than later.

Re: Passport Name Change

  • The way I read it, if your passport is more than a year old- then you have to pay the standard renewal fee when you change your name.   The adult renewal fee is $110.   The $60 charge is if you need to expedite the process, and that is in addition to the $110.

Luckily I just got my passport in Feb.   I had better apply for the name change quick so that I won't have to pay for a new one.

  • Yea it sucks. I've had mine for a couple of years now so I have to pay to renew it all over again. I was pretty mad about it, but it's one of those things I want to do it soon before I need it. I told DH we better go somewhere fun soon. lol
  • Mine actually expires in February, so I would have to pay the fee anyway.  I am just waiting a little while before I do it since I don't have any more international trips planned.

  • Mine is a Polish Passport, and once I get a green card, i will go and change my name, until then, I will keep it as is... they normally mess up the visa and you can't enter the country without going through a bureaucratic mess of a consulate visit.  I kinda want to always keep my Polish passport, even when I have a citizenship, because it's easier to travel to most places with a European passport - less paper work to fill out :)
  • I just got mine in July knowing I would have to redo it, but I did it the day before the fees went up and since it's less then a year old it's free to change my name on it.
  • Ugh, yeah.... I'm not looking forward to this one.  I plan on not doing it until I have to, just because no matter what, I'm going to have to pay the renewel fee.
  • I am trying to figure out if I should change mine.  DH and I want to go to the Caribbean sometime in November.  I have gotten my social security card changed and now I must get my DL changed within 30 days.  The problem is that I have a credit with the airlines in my maiden name. I need identification with that name on it.  Apparently I can travel with my passport... anybody know if they require both DL and passport?  If so I would be in trouble because the names wouldn't match!!!

You should check with the airline.  You may be able to tell the airline you got married and change your name with them.  Then you could get a new passport.  But if you do that, you may have to expedite it to get it in time.

I changed my name with my airline with my frequent flier miles.  It was no big deal.  Then I can still use my miles with my new name.  I would recommend that route.

  • Did the passport thing. We're going on a cruise in Jan. and the flights and cruise were already booked in the married name. The $110 plus pictures was not fun to pay.

  • yeah - it's kind of riduculous, but I'm going to have to pay too.

The only reason I haven't changed my name legally yet is because DH and I are going to Jamaica in Oct and there is no way I could get a new passport (well, SS card and DL and then passport) before then.
