question about interview and being fired

I was fired from my last job and the reasoning was it was "not a good fit". I've had a couple informal interviews and I've been asked "why did you leave your last job?". I was kind of caught off guard and did not volunteer the info that I was fired. I have an important, formal interview and I'm not sure how to handle that question, since I'm sure it will be asked. If they ask in a way like they assume I left, should I roll with it or volunteer that I got fired? Any advice would be really helplful :)

Re: question about interview and being fired

  • You shouldn't be caught off guard with a question about why you left your last job. That's kind of Interview 101, and you should probably get it every time you interview.

That said, if you got fired, you should be honest about it (especially on your application).  You can say that you'd been there some time, and it wasn't a great fit on either side, and my former employer decided that I should move on. Go on to follow up that it's been a great opportunity to revisit the kind of environment you'd really do well in, or something like that.

  • I agree with PP. The more upfront and forthcoming you are the better.

  • I wouldn't tell them in an interview you were fired. Just tell them it wasn't a good fit for you and you want a position like the one you are interviewing for. That is not a lie and it will not bring up any red flags.

If you have to fill out an application and it asks you if you were fired from the job, you should put yes.
