Elimination Diet....

Has anyone ever done an Elimination Diet for allergy testing or other health reasons? H and I are on it to try to find some food sensitivities for him that are making his asthma act up. And I'm on it to support him and since I have frequent digestive issues, maybe I have some food sensitivities too.

So anyway, for those of you who don't know it (and it can be tapered depending on the needs of the person), we're on a NO gluten(wheat), casein(dairy+), sugar (including honey), soy, corn or corn products, eggs, oranges, caffeine, beef, or pork. (Oh, and no alcohol cuz it's all either gluten or sugar!! ACH!) I think those are the biggest things that cover 75% of our diet. :-D We started it last Monday. We go back to his doctor this coming Thursday and she'll start adding things back in slowly to test it. It SUUUUUCKS. I was just wondering if anyone else has ever done anything like this. We're having a hard time with no bread/tortillas. And I'm also shocked with how many things (even condiments, sauces, etc) they add sugar to. We can have most fruits and veggies, so we eat chicken/turkey and veggies, and can have rice and oats as grains. We got some rice flour bread which is DISGUSTING. And are about to try some brown rice tortillas with chicken fajitas. My fingers are crossed!

Anyway, that's what's happening in my life. I wanted to share it and see if anyone else has any similar experiences.

Re: Elimination Diet....

  • Kudos to you for supporting your husband and trying new things. I hope you guys find something that works for him and his asthma. I don't think I could do that for one day without going crazy, but of course, that is probably why I can't seem to lose even a few pounds no matter how much I work out...lol.

  • Thanks. And yeah, side note, we figured we would probably lose a few pounds doing this too, sooo... can't complain about that! But I DID go crazy til about yesterday. I literally went through withdrawal (also called kind of a detox time) without all that stuff and had bad headaches, EXTREMELY fatigue, VERY irritable. H had like 2 days of that then felt good, but I had about 4 or 5. I'm still a bit irritable I noticed. LOL But maybe it's not the diet. ;) Who knows.
  • A friend of my did a diet like this to determine the source of her digestion problems.  She discovered she had a gluten allergy.  She was so happy to figure out the cause and feel better that she hasn't even minded cutting the gluten out of her diet.  Hopefully you both feel better!

  • Good lord, Z, that sounds horrible.  I told my BFF about the whole thing and she basically said if she had to stop taking in caffeine... we should lock her up away from ANYONE.  LOL

Good luck, hon.  I hope they figure out what's making the man have the asthma problems.

  • You are a much stronger woman than me, that's for sure.  Hopefully it helps your H out!!

LOL Knibbs, actually we didn't have to cut out caffeine cuz we RARELY have it anyway. So that was no big deal. We cut that out a long while ago cuz H is a bit hyper-sensitive to it, so I don't wanna tempt him. Oh oh, except for chocolate. We both love chocolate. But we can't have any. :( Boo. Me too! (ABout finding out what's making him have problems). It's been making our household pretty up and down.

  • Are you eliminating it all at once or little by little?

Let's say it works out well and no asthma flare ups.  How do you decide which of the eliminated food groups was causing it initially?

Sounds interesting.  I should tell my sister about it.  She has a lot of health/digestive issues that they haven't been able to diagnose.

ETA:  nevermind, I didn't read it very clearly the first time.  I see know you are going to be adding things back in slowly.  You are a much better wife than I.  I'm already dreading being pregnant, Britt with no caffeine is really not a pretty sight.
