Winchester Hospital vs Lawrence General?

Any opinions? I'm looking for an OBGYN (just found out I'm pregnant) and two recs I have are associated with one of these.  I'm not from the area originally and don't know much about either hospital.

Anyone deliver at either of these hospitals? Opinions?

Thanks!

Re: Winchester Hospital vs Lawrence General?

  • first off, congrats!

based solely on location, I'd chose Winchester over Lawrence.

That being said, I have heard good things about Winchester Hospital but have heard nothing about Lawrence.

  • Congrats!  My old neighbor had her baby at Winchester and had nothing but glowing reviews.  I haven't heard anything on Lawrence General either way.
  • Thanks ladies! I appreciate the responses.  Such a hard decision!

Update:  Just called the OB associated with Winchester! Thanks ladies!

  • Definitely never go to Lawrence General.  They killed a friend of ours a few months ago.  He was in an accident, taken there, put into a coma, and then his wife--who he was starting to file divorce paperwork against--ordered a stop treatment on him.  They unplugged him, and didn't even give him WATER.  He lived almost 2 more weeks.  It is a terrible hospital.

First, I'm sorry for your loss. Once someone decides to "pull the plug" that is what happens.  All medical treatment is stopped.  If he was in a coma he wouldn't be allowed water, do you mean a feeding tube?  It sounds like there's more to the story than what you're generalizing here.  You really can't judge a whole hospital on one experience.

That being said I had one of my children at LGH and had the best experience.  The L&D nurses were amazing and the Maternity nurses couldn't have been more supportive. Just because the hospital is in Lawrence does not mean that the people who work there are not caring and are not capable.

BMC is in a bad section of town so would you not deliver your child there because of that?

  • I had two babies at Winchester.  Totally awesome experiences.  With baby #1, the nurses did a great job of showing me how to take care of my boy; I was nervous and clueless.  With baby number two, they knew to leave me alone and I was able to get much appreciated R&R.  It's a pleasant, small hospital.  Couldn't be happier w/my experiences.  Congrats to you!
