can we talk about scalping?

okay, seriously, maybe i'm just pissed because it seems to happen to me often but WHY IS SCALPING LEGAL ON THE INTERNET???

i just poked around for some mumford and sons tickets and they are selling for $150 - $200 each on Craigslist  and $180-$500 on stubhub.

Why is a site like stubhub even legal? the tix were like $20 each when they went on sale! it's absurd.  they money doesn't go to the artist or even the venue, it just goes in some greedy bastards pocket.

Re: can we talk about scalping?

  • I feel the same way.  I hate it.  It's not what the artist intended when they set the price.

  • Until your second paragraph I thought you were talking about removing hair from someone's head, and I was totally WTF.  I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't.

  • I feel the same way.  I was just looking for tickets that were sold out at Ticketmaster (another site that rips you off legally) and went to Craigslist.  They were selling $45 tickets for $200 each.  So annoying.
  • scalping isn't illegal here anymore anyways...but it sucks.

I actually have a bigger issue with ticketrapester, because a lot of the time that's the only to get tickets and their fees have gotten ridiculous.

  • Yep... scalping is legal here. Has been for at least a couple of years. I don't have a big problem with it. I have a bigger problem with Ticketmaster because their fees are so ridiculous.

Totally what I thought too.  Lol.

  • I don't get stub hub, some of the ticket prices are ridiculously overpriced from face value.  We try to avoid it if possible.  We wanted to go the Carrie Underwood concert at the state fair this year and could find tickets so we checked stub hub and a $60 face value ticket was selling for $350 . . . ummm no thanks.  If you pay that you are an idiot in my opinion.

  • I think scalping is completely disgusting.  Both kinds.

    Me too. I've missed you.
  • I think it's fine if you sell them for face value, I don't think they should be sold for more than that.

I remember living in Indiana and Dave Matthews playing a free concert. To get into the concert, you needed a ticket. I stood in line for 6 hours after work to get DH and I tickets (he was studying for a law school exam). When we got to the concert, the people sitting next to us paid $150 each for what were supposed to be free tickets.

  • HAAAATE Ticketmaster.  At least I can avoid scalpers.  Ticketmaster owns the world.
  • Part of the reason people sell so high on StubHub is because that site takes a HUGE percentage for themselves when you sell.

Honestly, scalping doesn't bother me anymore. I don't like to rip people off, which is why I usually sell for face value to people I know. But we have considered using our season ticketholder status to buy playoff tickets for the Twins and make some money for the kids. I mean, tickets are worth what people are willing to pay for them.

Honestly, do it. My aunt's seats (they're not selling) in her section are going for 2-300bucks a piece. We let a friend use our tickets, but if not, I'd totally buy them and then sell.
  • A coworker's husband makes his living on ticket scalping.  He's a bit of a gypsy, but whatever...  he actually has a lot of "regular customers" that sell their tickets to him at a slight profit, and he's able to turn them into a bigger profit.  If someone wants the tickets that badly, they'll pay.

I really HATE paying that to an organization though.  Ticketmaster, I loathe thee.  Stubhub seems ridiculous.

i'm mystified by those of you that are not bothered by scalping.

do you ENJOY being ripped off? the ticket isn't "worth what people are willing to pay". it's worth what's printed on the ticket. are some people willing to pay more because they desperately want the experience? yes. but that doesn't make it right or just.

scalping is not capitalism, it's thievery.

there are other more ethical ways to make money or your children's future.

  • strength, I disagree. Pretty much everything we buy is worth what people are willing to pay for it. Including event tickets.

  • It's not highway robbery though. Nobody is forcing anyone to pay those prices. If I don't want to pay $200 to go to a football game or concert, well then I don't go. I don't see this being much different than any other market. It's entertainment, not a necessity.

  • I sold Kathy Griffin tickets on stubhub that I wasn't able to use. I sold them for face value + the fees I originally paid to Ticketmaster + what stubhub was charging me to sell them (I believe it's 20% of the ticket price). I didn't make any money nor was I trying to.

I bought tickets on stubhub for Lady Gaga because despite logging in to ticketmaster at the precise moment they went on sale, all I could find were crappy seats. So I paid almost double for good seats on the lower level from stubhub. It's frustrating, but it was my choice to do it.
