QOTD

Have you ever been to the Emergency Room (for yourself)? If so, what for?

Re: QOTD

  • I have only been to the ER once. It was when I was 12 years old. Apparently I was suffering from a severe asthma attack at the time.

  • Just once, when I was a kid.  I had broken my foot at gymnastics.

  • I was maybe 6 or 7 and my brother hit me with a baseball. I bruised some ribs and passed out cold while trying to walk back in the house. My mom rushed me to the fire station that was next door at the time and then they took me to the ER. I still have problems with bruising and swelling that causes chest pains sometimes. Go figure.

Also, I was washing a glass I think last year, and the glass broke with my hand in it. 3 stitches later and I was useless for weeks. Apparently it happens a lot, because the front desk of the ER laughed when I told them. Also, my aunt's friend was the on-call nurse that night, so she loved seeing me and getting to poke me with needles. She's a little twisted but I love her.

  • Yes, when I was very very little. My Dad thought it would be a brilliant idea to put gasoline in a 2 liter pop bottle. I thought it was soda and drank it. Emergency room Trip one. Trip two (same week) I tripped on the outdoor stairs and went to grab something to hang on and burnt my hand on the BBQ.

I think I aged my Mom 10 years that week.

I haven't been seriously ill or needed to go to the dr really since then. (knock on wood.)

  • Only once - when I was 16 years old I thought it was a great diet strategy to not eat anything for days on end.  I was really proud of myself if I ate one sandwich in 4 days.  Stupid, I know . . . . Anyway, I got up one morning and passed out in the kitchen.  My chin hit the floor and split wide open, and I needed several stitches to close it up.

ETA: I forgot about the time when I was 7 and fell backwards into the fire pit at the beach and burned my back on the embers, and my shirt caught on fire.  That was fun.

  • I know I had to get xrays when I was little because I swallowed a penny, or something.  Apparently I was wearing overalls that day, so there were a whole bunch of shining dots.  Though why they didn't have my take them off is beyond me.  I think that was an ER visit.

I've done some pretty major tooth damage (I fell from a picnic table when I was little, my tooth stayed in the table and I went to the ground) but I don't think that was ER worthy.

  • When I was about 3 or 4 I had the front door blow shut on my little finger. I still have a scar wrapping all the way around my finger from that one.

Earlier this year I went to the ER because I woke up having terrible chest pains every time I took a breath (not that breathing is all that important). That turned out to be nothing major, but was definitely scary.

  • I think they know me by name in the ER's by now. When I was younger, maybe 14, I was stung by a bee and then found out I'm deathly allergic, then a few months later I found out I was allergic to some allergy medicine and passed out at work. Same thing, my mouth swelled up so bad I couldn't breathe. Then when I was perggers with Gib I was having pain and found out I had cysts on my ovaries. Then a few months after that (I was 5 months preggers with Gib) I had my appendix removed. Then, at 7 months, I went into labour and was kept on bed rest for the remainder of the pregnancy. The hospital I went to didn't have a woman's ward, all admissions were through the ER.

. Then, I had a pinched sciatic nerve with my pregnancy with Izaac, a migraine that lasted a week, and an infected parodid (sp?) gland.

  • ER visit #1, when I was 5, I jumped off my front porch and broke my leg.

ER visit #2, I was 20 and it was after doctor hours,  I had a UTI that was pretty bad, so off to the ER I went.

ER visit #3, this year I had major shortness of breath while pregnant, so my employer called the Ambulance, and I was sent to the ER, and L&D for observation.

  • I've never been for myself, but likely should have a few times.

I've been the cause of sending my brother to the ER before.  I can have a bit of a temper and when I was in 8th grade, he was really p!ssing me off and wouldn't leave me alone and I slammed my bedroom door shut and, well, his hand happened to be there.  The blood!  I got in so much trouble.

  • My sister and I were hit by a car when I was 8.  I broke my femur and was in the hospital a couple months, then body cast and wheelchair...it sucked.  About a year or so later I cut my knee on the sheet metal of a wood shed and got 5 stitches.

About 6 years ago I was injured in a bomb blast and was treated for schrapnel, blown ear drums and concussion.  I didn't go to the actual ER because it was a mass casualty, so they were a bit busy there.

  • Not since I was a kid.  The last time, I was cutting a piece of carpet with an exact-o knife and stabbed myself in the arm when I slipped.  I barely missed an artery and a bunch of nerves.

  • At least three times that I remember.

The first was when I was 11 and I was in a terrible car accident. I've already told the story, but I was cut up pretty bad and I was bleeding in my face, the medics thought I may have head trauma so they took me in the ambulance.

The second time was about 2 years ago. I was having severe pain from the stones in my gallbladder that lasted all night. I finally had Manuel drive me to the ER where I was given sweet relief in the form of morphine. I ended up having my gallbladder removed at the start of last year.

The most recent was 2 weeks ago when I started bleeding. There was cause for concern because I'd already been spotting but my OB Gyn told me if I started to bleed, I should go to the ER immediately. Thankfully the baby and I are okay, but it was the worst feeling I've ever experienced.

  • I've been three times:

    1)  My dog bit me when I was a kid.  My parents had given him a doggie  cookie and  he had take it on my bed.  I was half asleep and reached out to pet him and he bit my finger hard enough to cause some nerve damage.  So off to the ER for me, and the poor doggie got a criminal record :(  He really was a good dog aside from this incident.

    2)  I scratched my corneas some how, and after being out all day shopping with my mom and some family friends, I could barely see.  She took me to the ER.  Then it turned out I had an allergic reaction to the medicine they gave me, go figure.

    3)  I was in a car accident a few years back on my way to holiday dinner with B and a friend.  The guy who hit us not only totaled my car and didn't bother to stop, but his name was Lucky.  Go figure.  This was the only time I rode in an ambulance.

  • Oh boy..Here it goes.

Under 2 - My older brother and I decided to split a bottle of flinstone vitamins with iron. I don't remember it of course, but apparently I hated eating charcoal and having my stomach pumped.

We learned when I was 8, I'm deathly allergic to bees. I got stung playing softball.

Somewhere around 9-10, I gashed my leg open when taking out the trash. Right as it happened, my dad was in the middle of the sentence "becareful there's glass in there." I refused to go to the ER because I didn't want stitched. My dad lied and swore that stitches weren't required. I came home with 10.

Fastforward to 18, I couldn't move one morning. My entire body hurt, I couldn't sit up. Couldn't get a same day doctors appt (my dad was military so we had to go through the base) so we went to the ER. I had kidney stones. Ouch.

December 2006, two days after Christmas I was in a ton of sudden pain. Reminded me of the kidney stones. I was at work, couldn't get ahold of anyone and again, no doc would seee me. Went to the ER and within 2 hours had my appendix removed.

This may surprise you, but I actually HATE hospitals.
