We closed on our first home on aug 31, and it was full of furniture. Took us 3 weeks, but we have the upstairs emptied, cleaned, painted, new carpets, and appliances. We moved some of the old furniture into the garage, and downstairs (what we were keeping). We put some of the decorations into one of the bedrooms so we could go through them once we were all moved in. Well. we are 10 days from being out of our rental and we have our livingroom and guestroom fully moved in.We also have quite a few boxes. Plus MIL is now wanting to know when we can come and get everything out of her house of H's. We should have taken my mom's advice and just moved one room and set it up at a time, but we just started moving and putting boxes in rooms. We are heading to the new house tonight to start organizing so the dish people can hook up the tv the end of this week, but I feel like it is a no win situation. Where would you start?
Re: Where to start with our new house
I agree with starting with your bedroom. We did that, and it made the nights so much more relaxing after spending a whole day/night working on the house.
We moved in in this order:
Bedroom (furniture, put clothes away)
Bathroom (towels, toiletries)
Kitchen (appliances were from previous owners, brought in basic food items, dishes, basic cooking stuff)
Living Room (furniture)
Guest Room (furniture)
Office (furniture, set up computer)
Game room (furniture)
We had cleaned and painted before we moved anything in. We moved the basics into each room. Once each room had the essentials, we then added decorative touches and sorted through the rest of our stuff. We actually still have boxes that haven't been unpacked, and we've been in our house over a year.
That kinda depends, do you still have a ton to move from apt. and cleaning to do there?
I agree with setting up a bedroom, But don't get too hasty, once all is moved over there you can take your leisure at moving everything into place.
Get everything moved over and set up your bed.
Make sure the apt. is in order and turned over.
Then deal with the daunting task of unpacking.
Start with refining the bedroom, Move all your stuff that belongs in bedroom to bedroom and make it comfortable.
Then start with the kitchen. Get that all set up.
The rest of your rooms, do in order of importance, how much do you use living room as compared to den or second bed? etc.
On that note, when cable guy comes, you can just have him run the line in to where tv is going to be if you want to make it easy on yourself
)
While doing all of this, I would plan on a garage sale for all that stuff you aren't keeping from the old owners furnishings and etc. as well as all the stuff you unpack that you go, hmm, I packed this why again?
Good luck with the moving process!! Sounds like you're gonna be busy!!
