So frustrated with the vet!

One of our cats, Lizzie, needs to go to the vet.  We take them to a place called Value Vet because it's supposed to be a lot cheaper than any of the other vets around and the vet is actually really good.  The only problem is they don't take appointments so you have to go and wait.

Lizzie, is very afraid of strangers so it takes two people to hold her down while she's examined.  We wanted to take her on Saturday, but we needed a fecal sample and of course she didn't poop in time.  Online it said they were open Sunday so we tried to take her before our hike...they were closed.  The sign said they're open until 6, so we took her again today.  We get there and they tell us the vet leaves at 5.  We were really frustrated.

So we left her poop to be tested and it was $55!  I know this is California and everything is more expensive, but back home it was $20.  And I'm sure I'll have to take her back in and pay for an office visit and whatever else.  This is so annoying.

  • Wow, that seems very pricey.  Our routine fecal tests are around $20. I have never heard of a walk-in hospital.  I can see where that would get frustrating.  It is hard enough for people to wait when they have a scheduled appointment.  Maybe it would be worth it to pay a little more to get a scheduled appt somewhere else?

I would do this. That vet seems like waay more trouble than their worth!

Ditto this.  Try out another vet, or maybe call around to determine prices and see if this Value Vet is in fact a better value.  The vet that we use is amazing.  We took the two youngest cats in to be fixed at the same time and the surgeries, plus all of their shots, plus pain meds was all around $250.

  • Do you have a PetSmart near you?  The vet they have in-store, Banfield, has always been great with us.  They have a membership plan where you pay a one time membership fee, and then it's a monthly price that's drafted out of your account.  There's only one time I've been unhappy with them, and this was with a new vet that had started there, who gave Chloe antibiotics without doing a urinalysis first.  Everything is covered except any meds you have to buy.  It makes it really affordable.  With 3 animals, we've saved over $5000 in 4 or 5 years.

  • I'm going to call around to some places to ask what they charge for the fecal exam.  I know for an office exam Value Vet is half the price of everywhere else though.  Our neighbors have spent $20,000 in vet bills in the past 5 months.  I don't understand why vets are so expensive out here.

No kidding!  The had to have a ton of tests run and now their dog is going through chemo.  They've only done two treatments so far and they're already up to $20,000.  They have four more to go.  Insane!

  • Yeah, I guess that chemo WOULD be pretty expensive.  Poor pup!!  I mean, I thought close to 2 grand was a lot when we had to take Brody to the emergency vet because he overdosed on pain killers!!
