Re: Is this for real...

  • How are you getting these responses?  Are these from craigslist, or something like monster.com?

  • I had a response like that once.  I thought it was weird, but I needed a job so I did it.  It was pretty normal at first, but then they started asking if I had a checking account and savings account and which banks...claiming they needed to know because checks would be direct deposited.  Obviously I signed off after that.

  • I've been applying mostly through craigslist because I haven't really been finding anything on Monster, etc

Thanks Buckeye, I was thinking it'd be something like that. I'm not even going to bother.

  • Have you tried going through a professional temp agency?  Sometimes the jobs they have are complete crap, but some of them are really decent jobs in an office atmosphere (not sure what you're looking for exactly) that potentially lead to permanent jobs (I've had two that were like that).

I submitted my resume to a couple temp agencies. One said they didn't have anything for me right now and the other said my resume was non-traditional and they couldn't place me. Non-traditional my @ss. Whatever. I should look into a few more temp agencies. A family friend also might have a connection here so I'm trying to follow up on that. I'm planning on going back to school in the Spring, but I need to be working until then!

  • Wow whats with all the weird responses? I tried using Monster at one point when I was looking for a job, but I could never figure it out. My first job I found in the newspaper classifieds. I got my current job because I went to church with the manager at the time. I signed up for a temp agency once but nothing ever came of it. Does your city or town have a local website used by employers to search for applicants? Have you tried yahoo?

  • Yeah, sounds like a scam to me.

What format is your resume in? I would put it in the Harvard format (you can Google it for examples) or the Yale format. They are professional and most reputable companies will notice that you have it in the Harvard format. I made HH change his resume to the Harvard format when he was first applying for jobs and he got a lot more responses after he changed it.

  • I think my resume is pretty clear. I looked at the Harvard format... mine just has the job duties in point form.

    Feeling so discouraged. :(

  • HH was responding to openings on craigslist a year ago and it resulted in a lot of crap coming through.  As an HR professional, I can tell you that we would NEVER ask for someone to IM us. I can't remember what the other response was that you posted a few days ago, but we would never do that either.

Keep your chin up kiddo! The right job will come along soon.

  • Hey gold - you have a PM.
