What was it that McCain said about allowing troops to become teachers without certification?????
?
Please tell me that is NOT what he really meant. Please.
?
Becuase what we really need is more unqualified teachers. I am sorry, but being a soldier does not = good teacher.?

Re: Troops to teachers
It is not-here is what I wrote to explain it below:
Here is that program:

OK. The way he said it in the debate was HORRIBLE then. He litterally said "I dont want them to have to have certification"
SO that scared the bejesus out of me. Not a good moment for him.?
I believe every state already has an alternate teacher certification program. I think the soldier to teacher program would be similar to that.
Having watched H in the last few years, I think his experience would directly translate to working with a bunch of small children. The similarities are astounding.
Cynicism aside, and I have a lot of it where the military is concerned, they do actually get a lot of leadership experience while young. And, they're always having to teach someone less experienced. I think that they could be at least as good at teaching as those who do the teach for america type programs.
He did not word it the best, I agree, but he is correct-they won't have certification when they enter the program (I believe it works like other alt-cert programs where they receive pedagogy classes and then enter the classroom as they complete the courses to become highly qualified and permanently certified).
the Department of Defense must give priority to those members who have educational or military experience in science, mathematics, special education, or vocational/technical subjects and who agree to seek employment as teachers in a subject area compatible with their backgrounds.
This part is one he should have stressed as well.
?
Idefinetely think they have GREAT leadership skills. I will not argue that one bit. In fact I am sure that many soldiers will make much better teachers than many that have never served. My point is that being in the military does mot equate to having the knowledge to teach. YOu can be an amazing teacher of military tactics and not know a thing about world history or heath education.
Letting anyone serve without a certificate just seems like a bad idea to me. I realize that many states have programs that allow people to teach without full credentials, and those programs all scare me. While I am sure that many, and even most, students can be ready to teach without credentials, I think it is dangerous to assume that they all are and allow for these people to teach or children.
?
I personally want all my childrens teachers to be credentialed.?
An important component to alternate cert programs is that you're concurrently working on the cert, and you're being mentored at the same time. I really don't see it as a bad thing at all especially when the alternative is just not having enough teachers. How else do you address the shortage?
Besides, I think that if you limit teaching to those who pursued it specifically during college, you're going to miss out on a lot of great teachers, especially in math and science. My university had one of the best education schools in the country, yet friends of mine who were secondary ed majors had rudimentary understanding of math and science, and I'd worry about them teaching those subjects at the high school level (or even middle school). Why is their teaching philosophy knowledge preferable to subject matter knowledge?
1) I was alternative certification. In many ways, we were better prepared than the traditional teacher candidates because alt cert prepares you specifically for the district you will be working in.
2) I had a teacher in middle school who was troop to teachers. It was his first year. He was fabulous! He went on to become the principal of our high school three years later.
