Sooo frustrated I just need to vent!

Ugh!! I am so angry at something that happened at work today!! gah!!!

So I work at a veterinary clinic in town and we got a call today from a lady who says she found a dog that was hit on the side of the road and she was pretty sure one of his legs was broken. So I went in the truck with one of the other techs to go and pick up the dog. The poor thing, it broke my heart seeing him in so much pain :(  One of his legs was definitely broken, he had road burn on his side from skidding on the pavement and one of his toe nails was just so torn up probably from dragging on the pavement. On top of that his mouth was pretty bloody but we couldn't tell if he had just bitten his tongue which bleeds a lot, or if it was from something else.

First thing that made me angry that day was that the person that called us wasn't even the person that had hit the dog. She just drove past it and saw him on the ground and stopped to help him. So whatever jerk that hit the dog just drove off...yeah its upsetting when you hit an animal but seriously if you hurt a dog THAT badly..its obvious it needs medical attention..not just leave him laying on the road.

Anyway, so we bring him back to the clinic and give him some injections to sort of sedate him and help with the pain since we couldn't do anything else like xrays until we got a hold of the owner. We call the owner and end up having to leave a message and have to wait for her to call back, all the while this poor dog just seems to be getting worse. She finally calls back, doesn't act upset at all that her dog has been hit by a car and seriously injured. Just says 'oh he gets out all the time..' We ask her if we can do some xrays to find out exactly whats wrong and she just goes 'no thats fine I'll just come pick him up. He's gotten hit by a car before'  um...1. your dogs arm is broken  2. there could be internal bleeding from how hard he got hit 3. you plan on giving him no pain medications...  oh it made me SO angry!!! I really wanted to be like lets hit you with a car, break your arm and then take you home instead of taking you to the hospital and just letting you deal with it without any pain medicine and just see if you get better on your own.

I mean its her pet and we can't force her to do anything ..but oh it made me so mad!! Why would you have a pet if you aren't going to care for it, especially when its that seriously injured!  Ok rant over..sorry it has just really been bothering me all day today and I had to get that out. How has you day been?

Re: Sooo frustrated I just need to vent!

  • Wow, that is horribly upsetting! I'm sorry, Laura! Were you there when she came to pick the dog up? I'm hoping that when she saw how bad the injuries were, she changed her mind. That's just terrible. I can't even fathom not wanting to get my doggies medical help if something like that happened. Crazy.
  • That is so crazy, I would be frustrated too.  I have two dogs; one that will run if she gets out of our fenced in yard.  It is my BIGGEST fear that she could get hit by a car....I don't understand how someone could be so nonchalant about it.  Grrrrr.  Your job must have so many pros and cons.  I would love to be around animals all day, but things like this would be so hard to stay professional about!  I'm sorry:(
  • It does have a lot of pros and cons. I mean usually the only things we deal with are people not wanting to put their pets on a heartworm preventative which is still serious b/c if it gets bad it can kill the cat or dog but its nothing as bad as this. We did bring her back to where we had the dog too before we tried to move him so she could see hoping that we could change her mind..but had no success. I just hope she comes to her senses when the dog starts crying tonight after his sedative wears off and takes him to a vet. Sorry if I'm being a little harsh, but it really really upsets me
  • I don't think you're being harsh at all!  That is so terrible, it would ruin my day, too!  Why do people have pets that they can't and won't take care of?  It is really beyond me because it seems like they have no feelings at all.  Our cat, Sophie needed emergency surgery that was ridiculously expensive, but we had to do it.  It was worth it, I can't imagine life without her.

  • I agree, I mean it is expensive when stuff like that happens to your animal especially when you aren't expecting it but 1. we have payment options 2. at least she could have let us do the minimum for xrays to see what we were dealing with and 3. you couldn't at least have gotten some pain meds for your dog at the very least?? Those were less expensive than the xrays were. I really want to call her and be like so how is your dog? Im seriously worried about it and its not even my dog haha
  • oh gosh that just makes me want to cry :( i hate people sometimes....the person who hit the dog AND the person who wont allow him medical treatment. THAT is animal cruelty....shouldn't that be illegal especially with the extent of his injuries? I don't know about law in Texas but i'm pretty sure the vet could definitely fight that here.

    I'm so sorry :(

  • This should be illegal!!!  How can she possibly let that poor dog suffer that way?!?!?!?  This breaks my heart, and makes me sooo mad! People like her should not be allowed to have pets.

I'm the worlds biggest animal lover (self proclaimed :)  and would LOVE to work with animals, but this is the exact reason why I don't.  I would not be able to handle the bad side of it.  I'm sorry you had to deal with this today. It has to be very upsetting and frustrating for you. Hopefully today is much better!  Keeping my fingers crossed that that woman came to her senses and sought the proper care for her dog last night.

  • That is just horrible!  First, the person who hit the dog should be ashamed.  I get it, it was an accident.  Anyone could have it happen to them if a dog runs out in front of them.  But to drive off like that?  If that other woman didn't find the dog, he probably would have died!  And for the owner to not seem to care!?!  People just amaze me!

  • Wow, that's insane!  I cannot believe people can truly be like that!!!!  Ugh.  That poor dog :(  I would do almost anything for my animals.  - I can't believe she just took him home without trying to do anything for him. It's making me angry!  I hope she realizes how dumb she's been and brings him back in for some help.  Animals don't deserve this kind of treatment. I'm sorry that you had to go through that.  I really hope you have a better day today.
