New to this board!

Hi Everyone!  I'm glad that I stumbled across this board!

I'm fed up with my current job.  I started three years ago this month.  One year (9 months) as an intern as I finished up my degree, and the rest as an employee.  I just can't handle it anymore--every morning, I wake up thinking of ways to make the day go faster, or what I can look forward to doing after work...I am not the only one at my company who feels this way--my boss is very difficult to work for and many people in other departments have been looking for months.  I want to work in a similar industry, but instead of a small company, I want to try the corporate route.  This is largely due to the fact that I haven't ever worked for a large company (mine is only 20 people), and I would like the opportunity for growth within the company.  Plus, I want the benefits/security that a larger company can offer.

Anyway, how often do you usually have to wait after submitting a resume to a company's website before hearing back?  I am only applying at companies that have specific jobs that are open--but when do I lose hope that they will not be contacting me?  A week?  Two weeks?  A month?

Please cross your fingers for me--and sorry for the super long post!

I think I've heard from companies between 2 weeks and a month, but it can vary. I usually move on mentally after a little over a month.

It's funny, one of the jobs I applied for a few months ago felt like the perfect fit, but they never contacted me. Now I'm up for another job, and I learned from a little LinkedIn stalking that the guy who I will replace got that first job. I will be expanding upon the things he did, and taking a more senior role, and I think he's taking on more in this job. So it seems like he and I are along the same type of path and have a comparable skill set.

My point being, it all works out (hopefully, still waiting for the offer this week). If one place doesn't contact, another one will.

  • I would follow up after a week and then let it go.

  • Weird...I was in this same position! I worked for free for this dragon lady for three months after I graduated college. I then got hired part time, then full time, and got raises, etc. She was impossible to work for and always made me feel like I wasn't good enough and that I wouldn't get a job anywhere else. The problem with this lady was that, even after having a civil parting-of-ways convo with her and agreeing that I had done very good work while I was there, she began giving me BAD REFERENCES!!! There was no escape route with this job... I finally told her to shove it and was hired in a COMPLETELY different field of work two months later.

I have EXCELLED in my new position, to say the least. I also have a few job offers on the table from other companies and it's nice to feel like I'm worth something again.

Moral of the story=don't EVER let someone make you feel trapped, or make you feel like you're not good enough. Go out to interviews with confidence that you are worth your asking price and toot your own horn--no one else will do it for you!

I usually wait a week and call. Then, show up in person. People like to put a face to a name. Believe it or not, I got a job once because I showed up to inquire about the position and the manager didn't want to have to sift through the thousands of resumes he had gotten on CareerBuilder!!!

  • Thank you so much for sharing your stories :)  Really appreciate getting the support and hearing from other people who have (successfully) gotten through what I'm going through.
