So, the night of our anniversary, we got home and found that kitty had used our bed as her litter box. We figured it was just an accident, and spend Sunday afternoon at the laundrymat. Then, she did it again Sunday night. This got me thinking that about this time last year she had a bladder infection.
I made an appointment with the Vet today, and it turns out she is one sick kitty. She is an indoor only kitty, but somehow managed to get fleas!!! So, on top of a most likely bladder infection the poor thing has fleas. She had to stay tonight overnight at the vet so they could do more testing to confirm the bladder infection, and start treatment for fleas.
I've spent all night cleaning the house, and using this god-awful smelling flea killer all through our house. Any suggestions on more natural ways to kill the fleas that are in the house, and tips for preventing them from coming back?

Aw, I like the picture! Pretty cat.
Sorry, I don't have any experience with fleas, so I can't help you there. That sucks that she got them, even though she's indoor only. How strange!
I've been dealing with a sick kitty (urinary tract infection) lately too. It's no fun. I hope yours is feeling better very soon!
Jinx, of course. She's always the sickly one. Actually, when I was at the vet recently, my vet showed me Zoey's chart which was one piece of paper. Then she showed me Jinx's chart which was a big stack of papers!
Jinx finished her antibiotics a few days ago. Hopefully the infection is out of her system and she'll be good to go for awhile.
Sorry about your kitty; that's terrible!
Our cat had fleas last year (also an indoor cat- what the heck?) and it took us months to get rid of them. We gave the cat Frontline and we vacuumed the entire house, every nook and cranny, and all the furniture every single day. We also gave the cat CapStar a few times. It's a small pill that kills all the fleas on their body within a few hours. The pill only works for a day (or even less), but it's very effective and gives the cat some relief. We would isolate him in the bathroom when we did it so that there wouldn't be fleas falling off of him all over the house and also so we could get an idea of if there were fleas left or not. Our cat's fleas were really bad by the time we discovered them. It was the week of our wedding when he got them so we hadn't noticed the signs and they continued to get worse before we did anything about them. I'm sure you caught yours earlier than we did! I also think the cold weather helped kills ours off completely, so if you have to deal with it I guess now is a good time since it's cooling off! Hope that helps- let me know if you have any questions that I can help with.
Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to put her in the bathroom when we giver her at home meds. They gave her a capstar last night, I'm not sure if they'll send us home with some or not. I'm home on my lunch to do more cleaning now. Did you have to do any special cleaning around the litter box(es)? I've disinfected them along with the rest of the house. Our vet gave us a spray to use on every surface in the house, called knockout. Did you ever use that?
It's just SO GROSS finding the little fleas everywhere, but I guess at least our house is probably the cleanest it's ever been.
Aw I'm sorry that is no fun
Poor kitty.
You probably brought the fleas in on your shoes or coat. Do you or anyone who has been in your place recently work with animals on a farm or anything? Or have you visited one recently? Been to someone else's place whose pet has fleas?
It could be a fluke thing but if you regularly go to places where you could be picking up the fleas, I'd start taking my shoes and coat off outside or in the garage so as to not bring them inside.
To check your cat for fleas in the future you can put her over a piece of white printer paper and give her fur a good rub/shake - you'll be able to see flea poop or fleas fall out on the paper if she has them.
Hope you have a healthy kitty soon!

I know it's disgusting! We were finding signs of fleas on everything and I couldn't sleep I was so grossed out, lol but like you said it is good motivation to keep the house clean. I hope your kitty gets better soon!
