Poll: unhealthy habits

So yep...I watched BL last night.  So now I am back on my kick about getting healthy.  I go for walks about 4-5 miles every day with Miley.  1 mile in the morning, 1 mile at noon, 1 mile after work and 1-2 miles after supper.  I do an exercise ball workout 2-3 times a week with weights.  I will fully admit that I skipped last night's walk with Miley because I had a HORRIBLE headache and felt like crap!  She did get her after work walk though.

Where I fail miserably is my eating habits. OK, and my drinking habits.  I can NOT get past my pop in the morning.  I'm not a coffee person unless it is LOADED with sugar and cream.  So I have my 1 diet coke every morning.  I drink a TON of water throughout the day.  I'm not a breakfast person, so I don't normally eat until 10-10:30 and I bring a couple pieces of bread to work for some toast around then.  Lunch is usually fast food since I have almost no time for lunch.  (which I KNOW I have to change!!)  Some days if traffic goes smoothly, I can fit in some leftovers at home.   Then supper is a healthy meal (usually!  lol)  for instance last night it was a marinaded pork roast with green beans, mashed potatoes and stuffing.  I tend to fill my plate more with the green beans and pork since I know there are more carbs in the other 2 sides and just have a very small portion of those.

So eating is a hinderence for me and I know that to actually lose weight instead of just maintain it, I need to step up from just walking daily to an actual workout.

So what are your habits??

Re: Poll: unhealthy habits

  • Probably my inability to resist sweets...which I will be changing in November when I hit 30 due to scary studies that show women gain typically 20 lbs between the ages of 30-50...I've also stepped up my strength training to help combat that.

Other then that probably balanced eating.  I am not a 3 meals a day person, nor am I a 5 small meals a day person...I eat twice a day and that's it.  I swear by breakfast (due to your bodies natural mechanism to go into starvation mode if you don't eat it), and a mid to late Lunch/Dinner around 2:30-3pm...and that my friends is it.  I will eat something light for lunch if I know I am going out to dinner, or eat a later breakfast but that's it.

I guess the bottom line is I eat when I am hungry and I am only hungry twice a day, and I've thankfully maintained my weight and my weight loss for 7+ years and through having a kid too.

  • I think we're twins. Seriously.

For me, it's my activity. I have a desk job so I sit all day, 8hrs a day, 5 days a week. I have a 30 min drive home and when I get home, we make dinner, do a little cleaning up around the house and then watch tv or read for the rest of the night.

We bring our own lunches to work. They're either leftovers or sandwiches. They're not unhealthy but they're not as healthy as they should be. Hardly any vegetable, sometimes a fruit cup but other than that nothing.

I'm a Diet Coke addict! I sometimes have coffee in the morning, but more often than not, I'll choose a DC. I'll have one with lunch too. Probably one at home too, if we have it in the house. If we don't, I don't drink anything really. I'll have milk with dinner though. I do try to drink water here at work, I'd say I'm the best about drinking water at work. I don't like our tap water at home, but I do have a brita filter.

What is the hardest for me is that DH and I are so different. I'm willing to go for a walk after work or something and he won't want to, so I don't go. We don't live in the best part of our town so I don't like going alone, but I could just do laps around our townhome association. His Doctor told him that losing weight isn't about portion control (or something like that...) so he isn't really concerned with that. I, on the other hand, think it has a lot to do with portion control.

Another thing is our financial situation, we're really plugging away at getting out of our credit card debt by the end of the year, coupled with some unexpected medical and car repair bills and I feel like we're drowning. So when we go grocery shopping, I go for the cheaper stuff. Our cart is never full with the healthy stuff. We shop at Aldi sometimes and we're both a little leary of their produce section. DH works with/in produce for his career so he has high standards I guess.

I know we have a lot of room for improvement, we just need to get going and start improving! We want to conceive in hopefully the beginning of 2011, but before that happens we both need to lose some weight.

I DVR'd BL last night... I'll probably watch it tonight after I run my errands.

yeah, I have never heard this but I COMPLETELY believe it.  I have not changed any major habits and in the last 2 years have gone up 20 pounds for NO reason.  I'm fighting to maintain my weight even more so I know losing is going to be a b!tch for me, but that's ok!  I'm up for it!

  • Amy, I think we ARE twins!  lol  I can relate about the financial part of it also!  Buying healthy is a TON more expensive, but I try to as much as possible.  We always have apples, pears and oranges at home.  If I buy chicken, I buy it from the meat department and they are HUGE breasts!  Think Skylar and I can cook one up and it serves both of us!

But yeah, I can totally start packing my lunches and be MUCH healthier right there alone!  But I have to run home every day to let Miley out so I usually grab something fast on my way back to work.  Maybe I should buy a tupperware type thing were I can packa  meal the night before when I am putting the food away.

And I do go for my walks, but I have a husband who when he is around is not very supportive.  He doesn't understand the concept of needing to lose because he is just the opposite and fighting to gain.  must be rough, huh?!  So if I ask him to do something like that with me, he never does and it discourages me some.

  • Not to sound like a personal trainer or something...but if you do end up eating fast food or going out for lunch, have you considered trying kids meals?  I do that when I have a craving for fast food...and always try to stick with grilled anything at fast food, and don't buy into the "salads are healthy" at fast food places...most of the time you can get a plain old hamburger for about 200 less calories then a salad there (I don't eat at fast food where I can't check the nutritional information first).

Also, when you're out walking Miley try and do some intervals and incorporate some strength into it.  Like walk for 5 minutes to warm up then do intervals of speed walking and then walking lunges, and then speed walking...eventually working up to running with her for a couple minutes.  You're going to burn way more calories doing that alone then just walking, plus you'll be adding strength into your work out.  Miley looks like a bigger dog (long legs good for running), she might enjoy an after dinner run???

  • Honestly, I don't think that I have many unhealthy habits. That said, many of my healthy habits have gone to the way side as my photography business has increased.

Every morning I start my day with a piece of wheat toast topped with a hard boiled egg white and a little salt. I pack my lunch every day with  leftovers, canned chix/tuna + avocado on cucumber slices or some other variation. Most of our dinners contain a protein and vegetable, sometimes with a starch or carb, but most often not.

I used to be a Diet Coke fiend, but cut the habit before getting pregnant with Isaac. I now drink one cup of coffee in the morning and will generally have 1-2 pops throughout the week.

I used to have a lot more time to run, play soccer or video fitness, but literally have no opportunity now due to photography. I choose family over my fitness right now and am working on finding a balance.

I'm not necessarily happy with my weight right now, but I'm maintaining and my clothes fit. And the bottom line for me is that.

  • Janell, yes, I do order kids meal quite often.  And when I crave a chicken sandwich from fast food, it is grilled and I ask for no mayo and honey mustard on the side instead.  Then I  can control how much I put on and it's at least a little healthier than mayo!  lol

As far as the walks, I sure could add in some intervals!  I'm *almost* to the point that I feel I could jog for a minute or two and start working my way up.

And I did just call the fitness center at Altru hospital and will be starting there on Monday.  My insurance covers most of the cost of the membership if I go X times a month.  And I will be getting trainer who is specialized in working with people with asthma.  So VERY excited about that!

I also meet with a dietician on Monday so we can start up a menu plan.  She talked to me about a lot of fish, seafood and chicken...yeah...don't do fish or seafood!  Will do ANY other white meat!  chicken, turkey, pork, etc....so we will have some working on that!  lol

  • My very unhealthy habit is that I don't eat meals. I don't sit down and eat 3 meals a day. I snack all.day.long.

Every 3 hours or so, I'm grabbing a snack, and that's how I eat all day. And I'm sure I'm not getting all my nutrients and stuff I need.

Like last night, for example, I had pretzels "for dinner."

Awful. But I just cannot bring myself to sit down and eat full meals for some reason.

The day I turned 30, I swear everything got more difficult. I have crazy aches and pains I never had before, if I stopped working out for even a week, I'd put 5 pounds right back on. I lost a ton of weight back in my 20s super easily and now it's way more of a struggle to keep it off than it was before. My metabolism is different.

Ugh...don't say that, I was really hoping it wouldn't start RIGHT when I turned 30!!  Hopefully the fact that I am an energizer bunny will help me...I always have to go, go, go, I don't like to sit EVER!

  • My bad habit is:  SUGAR.  I can't stay away from anything sweet!  If it's in front of me I WILL eat it!

When I was going through testing before my hypothyroidism diagnosis I had a scary high glucose test.  It was after fasting for 10 hours and it was STILL high.  Not good.  Normal is 100 and below and diabetic is 140 and above and I came in at 113.  Gross.  I did a major sugar overhaul and my 2nd glucose test was much better.  It's still a daily struggle but I'm improving :-)

  • For me, it's my addiction to sugar. I crave sweets all the time--ice cream, chocolate, you name it. I love dessert.

The other problem I have is lack of time. I go to class two nights a week and Saturday's, so after working 8-5 on those weeknights, I head straight to class. If I'm hungry, I grab a snack (which I try to keep more "healthy" by choosing things like nuts, dried fruit, etc.) or grab fast food. If I'm not, I wait 'til after class and then eat something like a PB&J at home, which is usually around 8:30. I know it's awful, awful to eat that late, but I don't have much of a choice. With little time to plan meals and eat right, it goes without saying that there's not much time for exercise.

I'm at the point now where I'm so frustrated with the amount of weight I've put on that I just cannot wrap my mind around what I'm going to do to take it off. I know it's a poor excuse, but I just don't have time to add another thing to worry about and work on to my life. So, I know a serious attitude change is definitely in order.

I TOTALLY understand where you are coming from!  I was a higher weight when I moved home from the state of Michigan after the DH passed away.  But when I got back here, I lost 60 pounds.  But now 40 of that is back and it's KILLING me!  I think I finally hit my breaking point!  I have NO clue how I am going to fit a gym workout into my schedule, but I know there is no more options...i HAVE to.  My days on Tues through Friday go from 5:30 am to 10:30 pm as it is.  But I HAVE to figure out something.  Saturday, Sunday and Monday are no problem for me!

  • My problem is that I will eat healthy all day when I am at work but when I come home and make dinner it goes down hill. DH is a really picky eater (think meat and potatoes/rice) and although I always have the intention to make veggies/salad with dinner the starches that I make for him are so much more enticing.

The other thing that I do it justifying eating bad because I work out everyday. Even though I know for me personally it has nothing to do with how much I work out it is about what I eat.

I never eat fast food, don't drink pop, always eat at least 2 fruits a day, have low cal english muffin & p. butter for breakfast and a salad for lunch but yet I still seem to gain weight....ugh!
