XP: Rec your Washer/Dryer

I'm reading about mildew/smell issues with front load washers but I'm really liking how they use less water and are more efficient overall.

Do you love or hate either style?

Brands to look into or steer clear of?

Thanks!

I don't want to be on MSNBC, yo.

Re: XP: Rec your Washer/Dryer

  • I've never had a problem with the mildew smell on our front loader. I run the clean washer cycle once a month using the Affresh tablets. I've heard people use vinegar in the clean wash cycle but I was given a free sample when we bought the washer and liked them. After every load of laundry you must wipe down the inner rubber ring on the washer and keep the door open so the inside can dry out. If you do this you'll have no problems with mildew.

We have a set of Whirlpool Duet asher and dryer and love them! They came highly recommended from the store we bought them - the least number of repair calls out of all other brands they sell.

  • I have the LG front loader washer and dryer and love them.  I do clean the ring out around the washer after every other load or so and use white vinegar in with the wash as well (I put it in the fabric softener dispenser) and have not had any problems with smelling etc.
  • That problem is not exclusive to front loaders! People never realize that they need to clean their cleaning machines. Clean your Washer and dryer properly and you won't have that problem no matter what you buy.

As far as good picks, GE has an excellent reputation when it comes to most home appliances, I had my GE Washer/Dryer forever! My mom replaced hers, not because it didnt work after 20 years, but because the newer models could do more clothes, hers still worked after 20 something years and they were GE

Steer clear of Maytag, regardless of how pretty the brand looks, I've heard nothing but bad stuff about maytag products

  • We also have the Whirlpool front load washer and dryer.  I love them!  I've never had the mildew problem; I always let the door open so the inside can dry and I also run the "clean washer" cycle every 2-3 months.  I never wipe down the inner rubber ring though.
