The decorating board is funny.

This is how my posts usually go:

Me:  I'm looking for help decorating.

The board:  What is your budget?

Me:  Next to nothing.

The board:  Come back when you have enough to demo and reno the whole room.  There is no point in decorating if you are going to change it later.

Me:  Ummm...later might not be for a few years.  Please help me decorate!!!

Le sigh.

Wink

  • Oh boy.  I have successfully decorated our crappy apartment to look pretty great on a next-to-nothing budget, so it can be done!  I'm sure the ladies on this board would help you if you want to ask your questions here! :)

    Oooh!  Can I see pictures?

And I posted down below about my bathroom if you have any helpful tips.  I just want to decorate, not renovate :)  Add some color, spruce it up a bit...that's all.  :)

Do people really seem that way?  I guess I never paid attention.  You can totally do a room on the cheap, you just have to know where to look!  90% of my decor was bought on clearance!   Hell, even the tile I bought for our dining room, and bathroom was bought on clearance.  A lot of the girls on the D&R have unlimited funds to do whatever, and buy furniture off Pottery Barn.  Don't be discouraged!

Yes.  Someone told me not to bother decorating my bathroom until I was ready to renovate.  Ummm...yeah no.  I need to get some color in there and pick out towels and rugs.  We're having a lot of people over in a week and half and everyone will be using that bathroom.  Eek.

    Hmm

    Who told you this?

You can totally transform a room with paint and accessories.  You don't need to change the floor or the vanity to make it look nice.  Geez.  Sounds like someone on that board needed to take a chill pill.

And I remember a post/poll ions ago where a good 50% of the girls said their income was disposable and their husbands paid all the bills.  I was shocked.  Yeah, must be nice, huh?   Lord knows how much nicer our house would look if that's where all my money went.

I would personally wait until you are ready to do the whole room. I think you'd spend more money in the long-run if you buy temporary things for now that go with the current oak color and flooring. It's still going to feel half-done. And once you are able to change the light fixture or paint the vanity, you might completely change direction and decide that the wall color, window treatments and hardware you chose to work with what you had no longer work for what you really want to do.

Ugh.  I was just asking for ideas on paint colors and towels and rugs.  So annoying.

Oh yea I see that post now!  Sorry I wasn't paying attention earlier :)

I should take some pics once I get this place cleaned up a bit.  The only thing is that it is really hard to take pics of our place b/c it is so tiny, you can never get far away enough from a room to get it in one picture! lol.  I'll try post next week :)

  • If I would have waited until we could demo, my house would still be undecorated. That's the dumbest thing ever.

And GAH! I want my income to be our fun money. That'd be REALLY nice.

Wow! I didn't realize my sister was on the Nest.

So far in 11 years of marriage, they have been in three homes and I think she remodeled each room 2-3 times before moving.  She even made her husband move furniture around the night the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 2002. That is just wrong...it gives wives a bad name. Poor guy.
