Had an upsetting doctor's appt this morning

Took Elise for her 2 year checkup this morning and while the pedi is looking her over, she asks if Elise has always had breast tissue.  I told her that I thought she did, I remember noticing in a picture from about a year ago that she did, so she kept asking me if I noticed it getting bigger because she doesn't remember ever noting that on Elise's charts.  So of course my heart sinks and my stomach drops and the tears well up in my eyes.  She kept telling me not to worry that it wasn't anything bad, just that she might be having some hormone problems.

Of course I worry though, that's my baby girl and you never want to hear anything at checkups other than that they are perfect!  The doctor is making an appointment for her with an endocrinologist.  So I've been crying all day, pretty much worrying about her.  I googled it and honestly I think it's fine, it sounds like it's pretty common in her age bracket, so that is reassuring.  From what I read, it happens usually between 1.5-3 years and goes away on it's own.  As long as they aren't showing other signs of premature puberty, like pubic hair, odor, acne, etc.  And she isn't, and it's only on one breast which sounds like textbook case from what I read.

Still, I worry.  The doc's office is YET to call me with the new appointment time so I'm about to call them.  Keep E-girl in your prayers though that everything works out.  This day has royally sucked.

  • thanks, I'm trying to be positive and not think the worst.  It's just so scary, especially with what my cousin's little girl is going through (they haven't gotten results yet on that yet).  Still waiting to hear when her appointment is going to be.

  • I'm very sorry you're upset and I hope all is well. At the risk of sounding naive, what could this be and what would it end up as? Put plainly, what are you worried about?

(I am being very sincere. Can't think of a better way to phrase the question.)

  • I know you're upset and all moms just want their babies to be fine.  I have a friend whose child actually had some hormonal issues at about a year.  With some meds, the hormones are controlled and shouldn't pose a problem (she was going into early puberty).  So if the worst should happen, (which it doesn't sound like it should since she's not showing any other signs), it is controllable!  Thoughts and prayers are with you!
  • Big hugs to you Christen! I'm sure everything will be fine with Elise but of course you can't help but worry. I'll keep you guys in my prayers. Hopefully the Dr.'s office can get you in soon so you can put your mind at ease!

  • I just got off the phone with the doctor's office because they STILL haven't gotten the appointment made and they said that the doctor seriously doesn't think it'll be anything bad, just something hormonal we'll have to watch.  And that the appointment won't be for a couple of weeks probably.

So that makes me feel better that they obviously aren't thinking it was urgent.
