DH and I have decided to join a health club/gym, but really don't know where to start. We used to belong to the YMCA, but found that their fees were just too high for what facilities/services we actually used. So...I'm doing some research and hope you ladies won't mind answering a few questions.
Which health club do you belong to?
How often do you go?
How much do you pay monthly?
What do you like best about your club?
What do you like least?

Re: Poll: health clubs/gyms
Anywhere in/around St. Paul and Roseville.
Which health club do you belong to? Lifetime (we got to the Maple Grove one)
How often do you go? I've gone anywhere from 12-20 times a month. It varies.
How much do you pay monthly? $50/month for me if I got at least 12 times (health insurance perk), otherwise it's $70. I've never had to pay the full price because I always get my time in.
What do you like best about your club? I love the classes they offer & the personal trainers I've dealt with have been a wealth of knowledge and very helpful. It's clean. Our particular club has an indoor track, which is nice so I don't have to do all my race training on a treadmill. There's never been a shortage of equipment. It's open 24 hours.
What do you like least? The lap pool and outdoor pool is shared with the Maple Grove community center. So at certain times of the day, especially in the hot summer months, it's full of families and little kids. Can be kinda annoying if you're there just to get a good pool workout in.
:::Our Adoption Journey:::
Evan James was born 1/24/13 and matched with us 2/20/13. The LOVE OF MY LIFE!!!
I pay for Time Out Fitness Studio in S. Mpls.
I go 3 to 4 times a week.
The fee is $70 a month. I know that's spendy, but all the instructors know their participants by name and give lots of encouragement and recommendations. The money is worth it to me.
I like what I stated above.
Sometimes their schedule doesn't line up with mine. They only offer classes so if their schedules don't work with mine I'm out of luck.
With all that being said, because of my new job, my husband and I get a free family membership to the Y.
Which health club do you belong to? Gold's Gym Vadnais Heights
How often do you go? umm...i've fallen off the bandwagon as of late...
How much do you pay monthly? it's 29.95 before my health care reimbursement. It's 9.95 after.
What do you like best about your club? fees, kids club staff is fantastic and they LOVE Kennedy, the cardio cinema (they have ellipticals, treadmills and bikes in a darker room where they show a movie). It also has a pool and hot tub.
What do you like least? location, I wish it was a little closer.
Boy/girl twins born at 37w1d and 37w2d
Which health club do you belong to? LA Fitness - I go to the one in Edina mostly since its close to work. I have gone to the one in Apple Valley a few times.
How often do you go? 4-5 times a week.
How much do you pay monthly? $36 however I get the $20 insurance discount if I go at least 8 times a month.
What do you like best about your club? The classes (spin, body works, kick box, etc)
What do you like least? The air circulation is bad in this club. On the hot summer days its very hot (like the air isn't on at all).
Which health club do you belong to? LA Fitness
How often do you go? Winter: 4 times a week, summer 1 time a week
How much do you pay monthly? $30- I do NOT get the health insurance discount through my employer, so this is the cost without any discounts. I know that LA will vary their prices quite a bit based on who you talk to and when you join. A friend of mine claims she has $0 down when she joined and $30 a month- I paid about $150 down when I joined (PLUS first and last months rate, which is required when you start)
What do you like best about your club? #1 is price- cheapest of anywhere I looked. Relatively quiet (Edina location- though I've been to St. Paul Midway and SLP locals also), clean, no muscle heads, never have had to wait for equipment although I do have to share lanes in the pool once in awhile early in the week. At first we paid $10 a month for the daycare facility. The sitters they hire are not the best (they are really there just to supervise) but DS was always happy there even though there aren't a ton of toys. I dropped his membership though since DH would rather just watch him. It is nice knowing I can bring him there in a pinch. There are a lot of classes although I haven't been brave enough to try them. Locker rooms are very clean and new.
What do you like least? Old guys like to hog the jacuzzi. Employees are not very friendly/engaging/motivating. I wouldn't even consider a personal trainer given what I've seen there. I wish they had more group stuff like a Run Club or events like Indoor Tris like Lifetime does- but you get what you pay for.
LA Fitness Now the Oakdale location, previously Apple Valley
3-4 times a week
34.99 before any health insurance discounts, I did not pay a 150 joiners fee, or first and last months dues.
I like my personal trainer best. She rocks, actually all the trainers I've had have been awesome (one left when she got married, I moved to oakdale so lost the second one, and I'm still with my 3rd). I'm not a class person, so I don't know anything about those.
I like least, the manager is weird? I don't really dislike anything.
