Poll: health clubs/gyms

DH and I have decided to join a health club/gym, but really don't know where to start.  We used to belong to the YMCA, but found that their fees were just too high for what facilities/services we actually used.  So...I'm doing some research and hope you ladies won't mind answering a few questions.

Which health club do you belong to?

How often do you go?

How much do you pay monthly?

What do you like best about your club?

What do you like least?

Re: Poll: health clubs/gyms

  • Where would you be going most often? Because I find that gyms vary from club to club based on location. For instance, I don't like the LIFETImE in SLP, because it's too big, but I like the one in Savage.

Anywhere in/around St. Paul and Roseville.

  • Which health club do you belong to? Lifetime (we got to the Maple Grove one)

How often do you go? I've gone anywhere from 12-20 times a month. It varies.

How much do you pay monthly? $50/month for me if I got at least 12 times (health insurance perk), otherwise it's $70. I've never had to pay the full price because I always get my time in.

What do you like best about your club? I love the classes they offer & the personal trainers I've dealt with have been a wealth of knowledge and very helpful. It's clean. Our particular club has an indoor track, which is nice so I don't have to do all my race training on a treadmill. There's never been a shortage of equipment. It's open 24 hours.

What do you like least? The lap pool and outdoor pool is shared with the Maple Grove community center. So at certain times of the day, especially in the hot summer months, it's full of families and little kids. Can be kinda annoying if you're there just to get a good pool workout in.

  • DH and I go to Snapfitness We go 3-4 times a week and go at least 12 times per month to get the health fitness insurance discount We pay $29.47 total for the both of us a month after the discount I like it because it's a small club, has all the things we need- machines ie treadmills, elipticals, bikes; free weights and weight machines, restrooms, tanning beds if you are into that. I don't need a fancy pool, steam rooms, spas etc. Oh and the price is awesome. I can't really think of anything I dislike.

  • I pay for Time Out Fitness Studio in S. Mpls.

    I go 3 to 4 times a week.

The fee is $70 a month.  I know that's spendy, but all the instructors know their participants by name and give lots of encouragement and recommendations.  The money is worth it to me.

I like what I stated above.

Sometimes their schedule doesn't line up with mine.  They only offer classes so if their schedules don't work with mine I'm out of luck.

With all that being said, because of my new job, my husband and I get a free family membership to the Y.

  • Which health club do you belong to? Gold's Gym Vadnais Heights

How often do you go? umm...i've fallen off the bandwagon as of late...

How much do you pay monthly? it's 29.95 before my health care reimbursement. It's 9.95 after.

What do you like best about your club? fees, kids club staff is fantastic and they LOVE Kennedy, the cardio cinema (they have ellipticals, treadmills and bikes in a darker room where they show a movie). It also has a pool and hot tub.

What do you like least? location, I wish it was a little closer.

  • I start Monday at Altru hospital.  They have me working with a trainer who specializes in asthma.  And since I am doing this through the bariatric treatment center, my insurance is covering all but my co-pays.  So about $30 a month.

Which health club do you belong to? I go to WBL Lifetime

How often do you go? Now that I have  a workout facility at my apartment complex...not as often as I'd like, but I do go to see my trainer weekly on Thursday's, other then that maybe 2-3 times a week.  I am also a big "work out outside" person when the weather's nice because being indoors all the time and all winter gets boring for me.

How much do you pay monthly? When I was working for HealthPartners they offered a discount so I got in for no initiation fee, and am grandfathered in at the Higher club level and pay $53 a month and then if I get there 12 times it ends up being $33.

What do you like best about your club? I like that there are clubs everywere...there's a women's only club in Roseville near work, and I get down to the Highland Park one when DH is out of town and my mom takes LO.

What do you like least? I don't really care for the WBL location, it used to be a NW Raquet and Swim club so they are heavy on the tennis courts and the lay out is wonky.  I've toyed with leaving to go to Gold's gym, but then I'd lose my great trainers and the low monthly fee.

Which health club do you belong to?

LA Fitness - I go to either the SLP or Hopkins locations.

    How often do you go?

12 times minimum in the spring/summer/fall, more like 18 in the winter.

How much do you pay monthly?

$37 regularly, but if I go 12x a month I get a $20 discount with my health insurance.  So $17.

What do you like best about your club?

It's cheap and close to home - location, location, location, when choosing a gym.  And  it has all the equipment I need weights wise.

    What do you like least?

Tt can get really busy during the time when I go.  The trainers are a little annoying too in that they have essentially taken over what ever equipment I was using without asking. But that's more of a personal problem :) OH and for some reason, sometime over the summer all the tv's are on this health network so the only channel I even come close to caring to watch is ESPN.  The others are CNN, MSNBC, and E! (which shows endless reruns of the Kardashians apparently).  There used to be local channels so I could watch the local news, Oprah etc when slaving away on the treadmill in the dead of winter.  This is also a personal problem!

  • Which health club do you belong to? LA Fitness - I go to the one in Edina mostly since its close to work.  I have gone to the one in Apple Valley a few times.

How often do you go? 4-5 times a week.

How much do you pay monthly? $36 however I get the $20 insurance discount if I go at least 8 times a month.

What do you like best about your club? The classes (spin, body works, kick box, etc)

What do you like least? The air circulation is bad in this club.  On the hot summer days its very hot (like the air isn't on at all).

  • Which health club do you belong to? LA Fitness

How often do you go? Winter: 4 times a week, summer 1 time a week

How much do you pay monthly? $30- I do NOT get the health insurance discount through my employer, so this is the cost without any discounts. I know that LA will vary their prices quite a bit based on who you talk to and when you join. A friend of mine claims she has $0 down when she joined and $30 a month- I paid about $150 down when I joined (PLUS first and last months rate, which is required when you start)

What do you like best about your club? #1 is price- cheapest of anywhere I looked. Relatively quiet (Edina location- though I've been to St. Paul Midway and SLP locals also), clean, no muscle heads, never have had to wait for equipment although I do have to share lanes in the pool once in awhile early in the week. At first we paid $10 a month for the daycare facility. The sitters they hire are not the best (they are really there just to supervise) but DS was always happy there even though there aren't a ton of toys. I dropped his membership though since DH would rather just watch him. It is nice knowing I can bring him there in a pinch. There are a lot of classes although I haven't been brave enough to try them. Locker rooms are very clean and new.

What do you like least? Old guys like to hog the jacuzzi. Employees are not very friendly/engaging/motivating. I wouldn't even consider a personal trainer given what I've seen there. I wish they had more group stuff like a Run Club or events like Indoor Tris like Lifetime does- but you get what you pay for.

  • LA Fitness Now the Oakdale location, previously Apple Valley

    3-4 times a week

34.99 before any health insurance discounts, I did not pay a 150 joiners fee, or first and last months dues.

I like my personal trainer best. She rocks, actually all the trainers I've had have been awesome (one left when she got married, I moved to oakdale so lost the second one, and I'm still with my 3rd). I'm not a class person, so I don't know anything about those.

I like least, the manager is weird? I don't really dislike anything.

  • Mrsdawnmarie~ I go to the Oakdale LA Fitness too and have been thinking about taking some sessions with a trainer. Can you tell me who  you like there? :) I've been kinda watching the trainers with other clients trying to figure out their styles and who I might like. Thanks.
  • Amber! HANDS DOWN AMBER! I also like crap, what's her name. She's really slender with really long, blonde hair? I've never trained with her though, at Oakdale I've always been with Amber.
  • Thanks!  I'll try and figure out who the long blonde hair one is too.. I just know I couldn't train with some hot guy watching me sweat and struggle lol
  • We work out at LA fitness, if you pay a bigger activation fee you get a pretty reasonable monthly rate. We joined in March and I shopped around to all the big names, Lifetime, LA, Bally's, The Y, (I did not do anything like snap or anytime fitness because I like to take classes) Felt like LA was the best fit, they offer a lot and have some great locations for us.
