health exception

Beyond the whole "pro-abortion" thing, that really really pissed me off.  He scoffed at the idea of a health exception.  Now, I can respect people's argument that "health" is undefined and needs to be defined even if I disagree with them.  But, to imply that it's not even a valid reason?  No way.

Does anyone else interpret that to mean he was scoffing at the mental health part?  B/c that's what I think.  It's been a recurring theme with some of the conservative SC judges, that mental health is a cop-out that is always invalid, and I think that's what McCain was implying but either didn't get enough time to say or knew he shouldn't elaborate on it.

Re: health exception

  • That's my thinking too. Mental health is mocked.  As if "suiciderisk" is really something to take lightly.  This woman is suicidal over her pregnancy, so let's force her to carry the baby to term so she commits suicide and kills herself and the fetus.  Brilliant foresight there.

In any event, the comment offended me to no end.  I wanted to reach through my tv and smack him.

  • Given that more than 75% of women are pro-choice to some degree (i.e. do not favor a total ban)... I think that will really hurt him, particularly with a demographic that he needs - badly.

  • If you were watching CNN, the differences between men and women to this question was STARK.

Men are way more pro-life when it comes to the health of the woman.  Touching.

  • I think he forgot women have the right to vote.  Therefore, he doesn't really have to worry about what he says that might matter to them.  How else can I explain him telling me that Palin is my role model?

  • Mocking the health exception for women made me beyond livid. L-I-V-I-D.
  • I didn't feel he was mocking cases where the true health of the woman is an issue.  He was just pointing out that "health of the woman" is very broad and open to too much interpretation and bending of the rules.  Think of times when your own doctor tweaks something so your insurance will cover it.  I know mine have.  I think that's kind of the point.

When I was PG, my insurance would only cover 2 u/s but guess what?  I got four.  One was in the ER so it was necessary.  The 4th one though, well when I expressed concern over it not getting covered, the nurse just told me not to worry about it - they'd make sure it was covered.  I believe they used the necessary to check measurements, fetal size excuse.

Obviously an extra ultrasound and an abortion are waaaay different things here but I can see where allowing for health of the mother would allow many rule-benders to use that to their advantage.

ughhhh, me too!! Especially when he did the air quotes Angry

  • I didn't watch the debate, and I'm glad now. ?Yay, I love to hear "McCain hanged himself some more," comments. ?There's no way this will come off well to normal people. ?Fundies, maybe.

    Air quotes = mocking.

  • Soprano, I was only listening to the debate while doing housework, etc so I didn't get see the air quotes.  Yeah, that's pretty "ballsy"  ;)
  • I was very surprised he brought that up. He didn't specifically mention mental health, so even if that's what he meant, I don't think it was clear to most of the people watching.
