how far is your commute? I am asking because I've recently applied to a job at a hospital half hour away and dunno if this is crazy or not, especially with a new baby. But the pickings are slim at there at local hospitals, especially for maternity which is what I want to do, and so I needed to expand my search.
The only reason I applied is because my class BFF just got hired on that maternity unit and they still have openings, the director of the unit is her preceptor from our spring semester internship (and they have a good relationship) and so she is going to talk me up and try and get me hired as well.
Re: working mommas
I work an hour from home (50 miles), but my husband works from home and my daughter stays with him, so I don't have to get her to day care. On the occasional days where he works away from home or is sick, I have had to drop her off with my mom. I get everything ready the night before (diaper bag packed, bottles ready, clothes for morning) and it has not posed a problem.
My biggest transition this year has been getting into a routine, as soon as I did that and stuck to it, everything went smootly.
yeah I havent looked into day care yet. 1) because I dont actually have a job yet and 2) even if I got one soon, I'd have to figure out what my shifts would be first. Theoretically, since most shifts are 12s, even if I worked full time, it would only be 3 days a week, which means we would only need day care part time in the worst case scenario. Best case? We wouldnt need it at all if I was part time or per diem, hopefully on weekends. That's my ideal shift I'd like to get, but beggars cant be choosers.

You do what you have to do to take care of your little guy, and that's what's important!
My commute is 10 minutes (love it!) and daycare is 10 min from work or from home. Daycare is less than 5 minutes out of MH's way when he commutes, so we switch off on who drops him off / picks him up.
I'm so jealous of nursing shifts -- it's so nice to just get working for the week over with in 3 days and have 5 days to spend w/ your children!
You'll have to decide whether you want a daycare close to home or on the way to work (if you need one), but I hear that daycares in MA have ridiculous waiting lists -- so you may want to look just so you know the landscape and get on the waiting lists of places that you love.

my blog
I was here years ago, before I got married. Then the forum got moved at some point to the nest. I bookmarked the new spot, but forgot about it until last week. I started reading some posts and most seem baby-oriented (either already have or trying to have)...totally not where I am in my life right now. But I guess after two years of marriage, it's expected. So I've been reading mostly the last week or so. Not trying to lurk...just not much to contribute when it comes to babies.
So, to answer your question...yes and no. I technically never posted *here* but was member when the forum was on the knot. Guess I should re-introduce myself, huh?
