Are you prepared for emergencies?

This stems from my meaning to put an emergency kit together all summer (and never doing it), plus my work promoting an emergency awareness program this month.

Do you have emergency supplies at the ready? Do you have a first aid kit? Would you be prepared if a natural disaster struck?

Re: Are you prepared for emergencies?

  • Good questions... Sadly, no, I'm not very well prepared for emergencies... should probably do more about that.  My first aid kit is in my car (for field work).  I have an epi pen in the house. We finally got a fire extinguisher last year, after 5 years of living in our house without one (terrible, I know!).  We don't really have a "fire plan" for how we'd get out of our upstairs window if there were a fire blocking the stairway....  bust out the window and jump, I guess?

We do have a general verbal plan for grabbing the pets and heading to the basement in the event of a tornado warning.  But yeah...

Thanks for the reminder!  I should do a better job with this...

  • My husband has us prepared for anything.  However, the question is will he share his supplies?Wink

  • Depends on the disaster.

Fire - yes, safe deposit box is filled with crap that we need for the house, insurance, etc...

Tornado - sort of, at least one dog crate is in the basement along with the camping supplies and extra dog supplies, so at least we'd be able to eat something and take Rusty for a walk...

Anything else - well, maybe... I'm not really sure. If any disaster happened where we'd need a huge supply of food, no, not unless you want to eat dog food or drink tomato sauce.

  • We do.  We have an emergency kit in the front entry closet in case of tornados.  For floods, (which is a HUGE problem up here) we also have a that tote that we pack up and can grab immediately. It just switches locations.  I have been evacuated one too many times to not do that anymore.  It includes a battery operated radio, extra batteries, a solar powered cell phone charger and cell phone, some power bars, bottled water, a flashlight, candles, matches, a whistle, extra clothes(basically a sweatshirt each), and a basic first aid kit.  And while it's not packed in there, we do have our sleeping bags in the same closet.

All of our important papers are no longer in the home, we have a safe deposit box at the bank plus a "copy" set at my parents.

What I have not done since getting Miley is add her stuff to the tote. Food for her  etc...

So yeah, I feel we would be prepared if anything happened.  Plus Brent was military and trained to deal with emergency situations.  ( If he ever moves back in...lol)

  • Mostly!  I used to teach CPR and First Aid classes for a job so it is sort of deeply ingrained to be prepared.  I have a first aid kit in my car (including gloves and a breathing barrier), a small one for when we take hikes, and a larger one that stays in our camping gear bins. It actually came in very handy one day when I witnessed a car hit a bicyclist on my way to work.

Tornadoes - not specifically but we have a basement and since we do some of our shopping at Sam's club, the extras live on shelf in the basement so we'd be OK there too.

Floods - well it'd have to rain for 40 days and 40 nights to flood my house so I haven't prepared for that contingency.

Fire- not so much.  I've been meaning to get a firesafe and just haven't gotten around to it. Although - my husband works in fire detection/suppression so we do have 3 (yes 3) fire extinguishers in the house and garage.

  • I'd like to think we'd be pretty prepared.  We've got a fireproof safe with all our paperwork at home.  With our backpacking we have a lot of supplies (first aid kit, headlamps, water filtration system, stove, etc) that are always in our packs that we could just grab and go if needed.  We also keep a pretty good supply of backpacking type meals on hand for last minute trips.

We have a fire extinguisher and also a 'safe room'.  It was built into our townhouse.  Basically it's a large wooden box put together with about a billion screws that comes pre-built and they screw the sucker into the cement, build stairs over it, and put a heavy duty door on it with 3 deadbolt locks- 1 on top, 1 in the middle, 1 on bottom.  So if a tornado does come, as long as we make it to that room, we are good.

  • Each member in my family has a 72-hour kit, which includs things like, first-aid, blankets, food(which we have to rotate through), compas, radio(crank powered), and for every person in my family we have enough canned food, and bottled water to last 30 days... I think we are good, and well prepared. Everything is stored safe and close to each one of us (we put them in the closet), and the canned food is in the garage in plastic totes, ready to go!
