Kitchen cabinets: WDYT?

We're in the beginning stages of our kitchen remodel and we're pretty set on using Ikea cabinets. So, we're trying to decide what color to use. Our kitchen isn't huge, and while I love dark wood cabinets, think it might overwhelm and make the space too dark.

I'm also thinking of the future, knowing this is not our forever home, and that not everyone has our same taste. We're probably going to have stainless appliances and granite counters, not sure what flooring yet. Wall color will be based on what cabinets we get; the white and birch would support a wide range of colors, while the med. brown would be a bit more limited.

Which color do you like - the white, birch, or medium brown? Thoughts or opinions on colors are appreciated too. Like, white is too hard to keep clean, etc.

Re: Kitchen cabinets: WDYT?

  • I like the brown ones, we have similar color cabinets in our kitchen and it doesn't make it look small. I also think they would look best with granite. The ones with the wood sides and white front make me think of those cheap cabinets they put in almost every apartment I lived in during college
  • I like the brown as well.  I agree with hound that the brown would probably look the best/richest with the granite and stainless.

We have white cabinets, and while I really do like the look, they're a PITA to keep clean.   Additionally, if you do white with granite and stainless that creates (IMO) a quite modern look, and that may not appeal to everyone.

  • If you are going with stainless appliances I would go with the darker wood also. Do you know what color granite you are using yet? I think that could make a difference also.

  • No idea what color granite yet, something neutral I imagine. Also the ends of the cabinets will be the same color as the front. That's how they come - white or birch inside and out, then the end panels are purchased to match the facing. If we got the brown, there will be brown panels on the end series of cabinets.

  • Also, are those the actual cabinets you're looking at, or did you just post those for colors?

I ask because I don't like the legs on the bottom.  In a small(ish) kitchen they'd use up valuable storage space, and it would be a PITA to always be cleaning under them.  Just my 2 cents though. :)

    I think that's a very good point.

  • I don't know how to say this without coming off rude, so I'm just gonna say it and keep in your mind I'm not trying to be a total beotch.

I kind of know what area you live in and to be honest I would not choose such a modern cabinet for a home in that area.  I feel like these would only appeal to a certain type of person.  If it isn't your forever home, maybe go with something a little warmer, less of a modern feel.  If that makes sense.

Just for the colors - there will not be legs on them, cabinets will go to the floor. Every cabinet photo on the website has legs, who knows why.

I do see Jill's comment about the modern look to them, this look is a medium between the one traditional option Ikea has, that only comes in a dark color, shown here

versus the even more modern options like these: a simple flat front, no trim. Most of the options are like this, in red, white, stainless, copper (i.e. not wood) either composite or glass.

The medium brown option we chose is wood, versus the birch that is a veneer. I think the white is a composite. So while the cabinets being more modern than say getting gorgeous traditional cabinets from Kraftmaid ($$$$$) I think they're a decent option for our house and potential buyers in the future, since every other material we will be using is natural.

Trying to make an effort to keep w/the rest of the house too, but I think this is what buyers in our neighborhood will expect - traditional with updated & modern touches/conveniences. We also want to get something we like since we'll be using it for a few years, you know?

  • Medium brown, for sure.

We remodeled our entire kitchen about a year ago, and I did tons of research.  From what I understand, Ikea cabinets are a PITA to install and their sizes are really weird.  BUT, if you go to the store they can lay it all out for you and tell you what you need.  I guess they are pretty good about returns, too.

We ended up buying unpainted ones and finished them with our stain of choice (similar to the medium brown you have pictured).  They turned out super nice and it only cost us ~$600 for the cabinets.

  • Hmm, I didn't consider that option. It would be less than Ikea ones, which we're pricing right now at less than $4K, which is still a savings over other cabinets. I'll have to look into that - where did you get your cabinets from?

DH is using the Ikea kitchen planner, which now is available online, vs Windows only. We weren't able to use it on our Mac before, but finally we can.

  • I found pictures of the same cabinets w/stainless appliances. We're going to have a few upper cabinets w/glass as well.

  • Our kitchen is small too.  We got our cabinets at Menards.  They were all in stock, so we just took them home and I took a few days to stain them all.  I love how they turned out.image

  • I think that by going with a wood grain finish it would help blend the modern and traditional.  I really do like the brown and with the nice countertop and appliances it would really sell me on a house.  I'm a sucker for modern.
  • My parents just redid their entire kitchen and they have a medium dark finish on the cabinets, stainless steel appliances, and a black/green granite counter top.  I love the way it turned out, it looks really nice.

Very nice! And Menards - I always forget about that place! Those cabinets are probably all oak, right? I kinda like the maple look of the Ikea ones we chose. Argh, so many options!! I could go overboard on this kitchen, it would be so nice to be able to do that...sigh.

I'll have to see what DH says/thinks about what I've found today. And I should post a pic of our kitchen, so you can see the ugliness and feel my pain!
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Oh I feel your pain on ugly kitchens.  When we first moved into the house, the walls were painted bright pastel AQUA and it had CARPET (yes, carpet in the kitchen!) that was POLKA DOTTED with brown, "rust", lime green, and aqua.  We did an "in between" reno with pergo floor and painted the walls and cabs until last summer when we finally decided to pull the trigger and gutted the entire room.

  • Menards is my favorite store! I would for sure try there. I like the darker wood better. I

  • Thankfully we do not have carpet! It is a yellow mosaic laminate though, with a lovely seam through the middle of the room. "Marbled" laminate counters and backsplash, one-piece range and upper oven from 1964 with push-button controls, falling down ceiling light that DH refuses to fix until we renovate - it's just crap-tacular!

I think I'll make a trip out to Menard's this weekend and take a gander at what they have. I still have to find a backsplash and sink too.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Our backsplash  is copper slate 1" mosaic tiles.....from Lowe's.  They had the best selection and it wasn't too expensive, about $200 for the tiles then $20 or so for adhesive and grout,  We used black grout, which was SUPER messy, but it turned out really nice.
  • Are cabinets are very similar to what Jeni has, about the same color, but we got ours from Home Depot so they are probably slightly different. They were very easy to stain and install.
  • I like the brown ones but I prefer darker wood in general for most rooms of the house.
