a nice restaurant in Ely/Virginia?

Hi all - hubby and I are going to be celebrating our 1st anniversary next month by taking a trip to the Virginia/Ely area for the weekend of our anniversary. I'd like to plan a nice dinner out on Saturday but from what I can find online, most of the places look very much like typical bar and pub fare. Since I'm not overly familiar with the area, I was hoping that someone might have a good recommendation for places to check out? It doesn't have to be white linens and fine china by any means - just a little bit more of an event than burgers and beer.

My mom and I were just talking about this restaurant in Beaver Bay we went to last summer that's to die for. It's a random off-the-beaten-path mom and pop restaurant that has so much character, amazing Minnesota food and overlooks Lake Superior. It's called Northern Lights Cafe and is probably 1.5 hrs from Ely, but I think it'd be way worth the drive. Maybe you could do a day trip to that area and see Gooseberry or Split Rock lighthouse which is not too far south of the restaurant.

There are a few nice places in Ely. The Ely Steakhouse is always really good or the restaurant at the Grand Ely lodge is good too. I have also heard really good things about the new Rockwood restaurant. Have fun! Ely is a great little town to get away to!

We were actually just camping on the north shore this weekend so I'll have to stash this away for future reference. I love the local "mom and pop" places!

Some friends took us to the Whistling Bird - (in nearby Gilbert) and it was really good. Kinda cheesy looking, but GOOD food.

I love the Whistling Bird!! We go 4-wheeling up in Gilbert and stop in there when we can, but that place is always packed. It's really good food and not what you'd expect from Northern MN. Authentic Jamaican in Gilbert, MN is a rarity

Another vote for the Whistling Bird. It's super random to find a Jamaican restaurant on the range, but the one time I was there (2+ years ago), it was goooood.

Fantastic ladies - I'll have to check these places out. DH has never had Jamaican food - might be worth a look! (he grew up on meat and potatoes with salt and pepper being the only spices in the repertoire. Could be fun to expose him to something new like this!)

I grew up in the Eveleth-Gilbert area and I had heard through the grapevine that Whistling Bird is closed. The owner's wife has cancer, I think? It was a pretty good restaurant for the Iron Range though.
