The ewwww/squicky/etc posts in buddha's post below got me wondering. Is it because a baby drinking any breastmilk other than mom's is gross, or because the mom didn't have a choice.
So,
1. If you were unable to breastfeed (due to supply, illness, or adoption, etc) would you purchase donated breastmilk for your child?
2. If you had an oversupply would you donate your breastmilk?
Re: S/O Boobyjuice
I wasn't really grossed out by it. I was only disturbed that it was a careless mistake.
I thought of the breastmilk bank issue, and would have donated if I had an oversupply, and I'd use donated breastmilk.
because mom didn't have a choice and the BM didn't go through the typical testing that is done when you donate.
1. yes, I sure would.
2. sure.
Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
If I was unable to breastfeed, I'd probably just use formula out of laziness.
I've looked into donating to a bank because I have way more milk than Ethan can eat. It's just too much of a hassle because the closest is 90 miles away. I would have to have blood work and testing done to ensure my milk is safe, and I can't bank anything that was pumped before the testing so the giant stash in my freezer would be undonatable.
I have a friend who is BFing, and has an oversupply because there was a chunk of time when her baby was having GI issues and they thought it might be an allergy to something in the BJ or something, so she has a freezerful of surplus. She was saving it for me for the kid that was supposed to come a few months ago, and as far as I know, it's still in her freezer for when I get a kid. I wonder how long that stuff will keep in the freezer?

for me it is yes and yes too.
tasty, I can understand your points. But the ewwww/squicky responses seemed more than just about that to me I guess.
moo, the child continues to benefit from antibodies in the milk and if the mom gets the flu shot, for instance, the antibodies from things like that (since babies cannot get the flu shot until 6 months). I know that frozen milk loses some of the properties that refrigerated or fresh milk have, though.
I had the hardest time with supply, did my best nursing & pumping but had to supplement with formula from the beginning because he was just losing weight at a rapid pace and gaining was a huge struggle. No, I wouldn't purchase donated BM, not that I even knew that was an option. I think formula is a fine substitute.
I guess I would donate it. I never thought about it. I never had enough for E, let alone someone else.
Blow jobs keep in the freezer for 12 months.
I would not donate or use other breastmilk solely due to the hassle of testing, etc. I would, however, nurse a friends kid in an emergency situation.
See, I am not sure if this is humor or not. I don't know you that way.
But, I have a friend who gets donated BM and I had considered offering her some of mine if it expires before I can use it. (well obviously not after it expires, but if that is approaching and I know I cannot use it.
1. I didn't have adequate supply and the idea of donated breastmilk never even crossed my mind. I switched to formula. I think this means I don't care about my child.
2. I like the idea of donating breastmilk in theory, but I'm pretty sure that would require a lot more motivation than I have (which is none).
1. Unless my kid was premature or had some medical issues where breastmilk and it's magical antibodies would really make a difference, I think I'd just use formula.
2. If I had an oversupply I'd consider it, I suppose, but I don't.
Winged, I'm actually not joking. I would offer my BM to a friend in your situation also. I don't have an abundance of supply however.
I guess what I meant is that if I was with a friend and we got in a car accident or something and her baby was hungry, I would nurse him/her. Or if she was deathly ill, or if we were stranded on a desert island, etc. I guess it was kind of a stupid comment, since I'm not exactly sure when that would ever happen. BUT I WOULD DO IT!
Honestly, if it was someone I know and trust, I wouldn't care if they nursed my baby in a non-emergency situation (like say they were babysitting and I got held up somewhere and the milk ran out). I mean, they could run out and buy formula, but I wouldn't care if they just chose to nurse him instead.
And I would nurse a friend/relative's baby if I knew they felt the same way.
Babies gotta eat.

My "ewww" stems from the fact that its a stranger. Who could be sweaty and gross. And then my kid drank her slimy, sweaty, breastmilk. Ewwww.
I guess I'd have the same issues w/ donated milk. In the end, I guess I would use it since it's "best," but I wouldn't try very hard to get it and would probably use any excuse available to go with formula instead.

Yes, but don't let her breastfeed your husband.
It'd be cruel to deny him the opportunity, should it arise.

Yeah, I could see doing this since I have an oversupply and I know it wouldn't take away from Dagger.
I didn't mean are you joking like you are a sick person. I meant like are you making a joke like from that movie Away We Go.

I'm sure if he had the opportunity, it would definately arise.
