Re: TLC's Sister Wives
Isn't there an HBO show about a fictional family like this? Or am I completely off. I swear I remember hearing about some polig. show somewhere previously.
But about this show.. I find it interesting that they are doing a show about this. isn't it illegal to have more than one wife? or are they not legally married? I am intrigued by more insite into this lifestyle, but still skeeved out.

Shelley, I *think* it is illegal if it's not for religion purposes. If you watch the second part of the video, he explains that he's part of a Morman group (but not the one most of us have heard of).
I would not make a good sister wife because I would be jealous all of the time if he was with one of the other wives.
The whole thing is really creepy to me but I will probably watch every episode. The guy creeps me out, but the whole family seems to get along and love each other!
There is HBO's Big Love that is about a similar setup. Not sure if it's been renewed or not. I've never seen it.
They were talking about this over on MM. He's only legally married to the first wife. The rest of the marriages are just in the eyes of the "church" per se.
I think it's going to be very interesting. I need to remember to set the DVR to record it.

It would creep me out being one of the kids. My half brother would also be my cousin.
I can't imagine my husband having additional wives, let alone them being my sister. Want to talk about sibling rivalry. I am interested to see the family dynamic though.

Yes!! That was the one I was thinking of. Yeah it makes sense that he is only legally married to one, and then church married to the other.
I know it was common back in the days for sects of Mormons to have multiple wives. And I know that most Mormons don't practice this or believe in this today. But it skeeve me out that there are people that share their husband with other women. What if a woman wanted to have multiple husbands. I bet that would be frowned upon by the church of course.

I watch Big Love for the drama, not the intricacies of mormon plural marriages.
I think a show without the drama would be uncompelling, and I think a show that tries to create drama where there isn't will just be disingenuine.
I've seen some talk about this on other boards too. I feel bad for the kids too - it's just all too weird. Ugh, the whole idea just creeps me out and I feel bad for the women even if they are consenting, it just has to do something to you deep down.
I probably won't go out of my way to watch but would watch if I was flipping channels and it was on.
I'm confused...are they sisters by blood or just sisters in the church? Real sisters would be totally creepy.
Ok that idea is over my non-religious head. Sisters in church?
Wives Unscripted
Yeah, some Christians say like, "sisters/brothers in Christ" since we're all God's children.
They are not really sisters that is just what they refer to each other as. Instead of saying Bob's other wife, they say my sister wife.
My friend is Mormon and she said that the only reason this was allowed at one point was when they were heading west and while traveling a bunch of people died, specifically men. So the men that were left took the extra wives as their own so they would be provided for.
I love Big Love and while I think this is still crazy and I could never in a million years be okay with this, I think it is interesting that some people can. While watching Big Love, I was actually arguing that it cannot be illegal because legally he can be married to one and in relationships with the others. The government really can not do anything about that. Apparently where it gets sticky is when it comes to taxes and then if every man took multiple wives, there would not be enough to go around. Oh, and if a man fathers that many people with multiple wives, you are diluting the gene pool with too much of one mans offspring. There is also the whole issue of the sects that marry off girls that are way too young.

There are other issues, too, like what about the women in these relationships -- what if they are abused and/or want a divorce? What happens to their children? How can they be provided for if they're not legally married?
Aside from that, it just bothers me. So much so that I couldn't even watch more than the first episode of Big Love. It was just too troublesome for me -- like listening to nails on a chalkboard!
