segment on the Today Show

Just saw an interesting segment on the Today Show with the family from the new show "Sister Wives".  I had heard of this show in passing, but only the name, never what it was about.  I actually didn't even know it is a reality show (maybe I live in a hole?)...

But it's about a "pleural" family, aka polygamy.  I have to give these people credit for making their marriage work so well.  I don't know if I could share my husband with 3 other women!  It kind of fascinates me (although I know it's their religion).  I might have to watch it!

Re: segment on the Today Show

  • I saw a commercial for this show somewhere--and I am also very intrigued by it.

It is such a foreign concept to me--I am even apalled when I someone is "seeing" two people at once, let alone married to more than one person!  I wonder how close the wives are to each other--if they live together or not.  That would be a relationship almost as challenging as marriage!

  • I saw a sneak peak for it the other night, and it definitely looks interesting, but I kinda cringed when I saw it.

They all live in the same house and they have something like 13 kids living there.  The kids all act like brothers/sisters, even though they are cousins.  He is sexually active with all 3 women, and they each have their own bedroom.  The man kept it a secret for ages.  His firstborn was born 4 days before his second born (had two wives preggers at the same time) and he just told the guys at work that they were twins.

To each their own, right? That's just not something I believe in.

  • I've seen some commercials for this show as well. I find it disturbing yet intriguing. Kind of like a car accident - you don't want to look but you can't help it.

So - are his wives actually sisters? I'm confused by that. Cause....that's really gross if they are. I mean, granted I don't understand the whole polygamy thing anyway, but I feel like it makes it that much more disburbing if they are sisters and all sleeping with the same guy. Ew!

  • I saw a preview too.. yes they are all sisters. I'm not sure if that makes me feel more or less comfortable with it? On the one hand you know these women, on the other...

I wonder what the kids think, either now or what they will think when people start asking them questions, or when they need to handle social situations on their own, without the adults to explain for them.

  • I don't know about the show, but if they're a polygamous fundamental Morman family, then the wives may be sisters but probably aren't.

They're more likely just women who are all this guy's wives, so they act like sisters and call themselves sister wives. Their children are all half-siblings, not cousins, but I think they generally behave like one big family and regard each woman as a mother figure.

I think it's disgusting because of the suppression of women that happens so much. The woman has to share her husband with as many other women as he wants? And just be a baby factory so he can overpopulate the earth. I don't understand how a woman could believe that's what God wants for her. Plus, it's illegal.

Lol, that's exactly how I feel! We saw a commercial for this show the other night... it kind of weirds me out, but to each his own, I guess. If we had cable, I might watch it.

  • This show is just another example of why I don't watch TLC anymore. TLC= Totally Lacking Character.  Seriously.....the shows include:

19 kids and counting....should people really have 19 kids?  Is it healthy?

I didn't Know I was pregnant...Really?  How did you NOT know

    Sister Wives......3 women sharing a husband...ewww!

Kate + 8....a "single mom" who complains about how hard she has it, because she chose to get fertility treatments, was SUPER fertile, got pregnant even though the dr. warned against it, etc....but every show features a vacation, shopping trip, special trip

Cake Boss....a uber loud baker who goes overboard and pretends that there is all sorts of drama in his little bakery when really if he planned a little, there wouldn't be such chaos.

Little People, Big World... Little People who have a farm, a rocky marriage and 4 kids who lack discipline and respect.

If this is reality tv...then I'm scared for our future folks

  • On a funnier note, DH and I tried watching a few episodes of Big Love. All DH could say was,"Polygamy must be the most stressfull existence ever, because you have to please so many women. One is plenty!"

Haha!  Sounds like your husband's already got this marriage thing down! ;)

But I think the shows on TLC are interesting, if only because the show a different way of life than most are exposed to.  Yeah, they've got some stupid shows, but at least it's not like MTV where they are all staged!  And I'm pretty sure those 19 kids are more well-behaved and better adjusted than a lot of the kids I know these days.
