work frustrations!

I know a lot of us have been complaining/stressing about work.  I am so annoyed with my district, the fact that they are planning to strike even though we have only not had a contract since June and no one seems to know what my Reading Specialist job responsibilities are.  So tired of people at work thinking I am not doing my job because I am not taking groups yet even though I am constantly testing, writing reports, and setting up our new book closet that needs to be labeled, organized and inventoried (probably 2000 book titles!)  I almost wish I could think of another career that would work for me.  But I need to keep reminding myself that I have a job that most of the time I like, despite what people think of the job I am doing.

Ok, vent over!  Thanks!

Re: work frustrations!

  • That does sound incredibly frustrating!  I hear about things like that happening in school districts across the country, so I'm sure you're not alone!  Maybe you should do like a monthly "newsletter" to the teachers to let them know what's new with the reading center, or group activities you are planning for the future, and ask them for input.  Then they'll know you're "doing your job" but doing things that they wouldn't have really thought of as falling under your job description.
  • Why don't they know your responsibilities yet?  That would piss me off too.  Good luck.

  • I feel your pain. I am a SLP so I used to get the same complaints. How long have you worked there?  We were in negotiations this year too and luckily accepted the contract on the last vote b.c. a no vote would have been to strike.  IT is really bad to strike in this economy.  No one I worked with wanted to strike b.c. we would look bad in this economy. Hang in there and remember to not take it personally (easier than it looks.)  Also, remember sometimes those teachers/people have something going on in their own life they are unhappy about or can't control and they act out/criticise others b..c it makes them feel better and in contorl. Have seen it in my district many times!
  • Thanks!  Sometimes it just helps to hear I am not the only one.  This is my 2nd year here.

As for my job, they changed how Rdg Specialists assessed and qualified students last year and this year they are still changing things.  Teachers are frustrated because they are unaware of how things work and I am not always sure because different administrators are saying different things.

Thanks for the advice and feedback, ladies!
