Post-debate confession

I hated this debate. I didn't think either candidate did even a good job. Obviously, I was less annoyed with Obama because I tend to agree with him more, but he was annoying me too. I thought McCain seemed more disrespectful and angry than he's seemed in the past debates.

(DH completely disagrees with my last point and thinks McCain did a zillion times better in this debate than in the past).

I didn't read the debate chat thread, so I apologize if this has been discussed extensively already.

Re: Post-debate confession

  • Hmm.that's odd. I liked this debate much more than the previous one.

The negative ad stuff annoyed me though.  There DEFINITELY could have been a better question asked than that.  Jeesh.

  • I shut it off when I realized they wanted to debate election politics and negative campaigning instead of actual issues.  I was turned off by McCain's constant interruptions and Obama's smug laughing.  It was just pitiful to watch.  And I didn't even watch the other two debates.  I mean, do I really need to watch the debates when I've got this board? Wink
  • After two minutes I gave up watching. This whole election has gotten on my last nerve.

  • Interesting Elizabeth.

My confession: I thought this was by far the most interesting debate of the 3. But as interesting as it was it only confirmed my opinion that our debate format sucks. I want to go back to Lincoln-Douglass style b/c the way it is now we don't get anywhere. It's all superficial, "try not to screw up" generic, feel-good rhetoric. Very little in specifics. Very little distinguishment between the candidates. There were some questions that generated nearly identical responses, even though their policies are opposites. That was frustrating to watch. I think we (the public) would be better served by a 3rd party interviewing/challenging each candidate separately than those two challenging each other every other minute.

I loved Bob Schieffer though. He challenged the candidates and moved things along well.

Re; their performance. IMO McCain's answers were the best in the first debate, but he showed some feistiness and specificity and challenged Obama's answers better in this 3rd debate. I would say it was his best performance, but I had very low expectations. I'm not bothered by his anger at all. I'm angry. Obama did a much better job last night than the previous debates. He was on defense practically the entire night but he did a great job of answering the questions and deflecting criticism.

  • That's interesting, caden. Part of what annoyed me about Obama last night was that I didn't think he did a good enough job of deflecting criticism.

Bob Schieffer was by far the best of all the moderators. I'm not sure it was him as much as it was the format. I liked having a longer time to have a follow-up discussion. The flexibility was good - Schieffer extended the time a little bit on the Ayres stuff because if he'd cut it off when he did, there would have been an attack by McCain just hanging out there with no response. I think forcing them to sit a few feet from each other is good because I felt like they addressed each other's points more directly than in the previous two debates.

It wasn't perfect, but I thought it was much more interesting than the others.

  • I was annoyed they spent so much time on the same exact issues.  We KNOW their talking points on taxes.  Can we get something new already?

So, for that reason, the ad stuff didn't bother me, although it did go on too long.  What people need to know are the character of the candidates instead of just their talking points.  A big part of Bush's problem has been his character, his hotheadedness, unwillingness to listen, desire to pursue his agenda despite laws, evidence, nasty stuff like that.  And I think the campaign ads can shed light on those character issues.  T

hey did need to stop it sooner, though.  How long did they spend on what easily could have been a throw away question vs how long did they spend on the one abortion question (which was actually a tangent to a SCOTUS question) in all 4 of the debates?!

  • I only watched part of it, but I liked what I saw. I agree that the moderator was much better for this debate. Schieffer actually asked follow-up questions and made sure the candidates answered his questions. I wish he could have moderated the VP debate.

  • I actually had every intention of skipping this debate--I mean, I just don't have the energy anymore and I wanted to see PR ;)

But we went to dinner at my parents' before they went out of town and they wanted to watch as they've been out of the country for the past two debates...about three minutes in, I was ready to scream.

My mom put it best, "They sound like two bickering children!"

I agree that Schieffer did a good job--I liked that he gave the candidates the opportunity to clarify their positions after the other attacked, but overall, it just didn't do it for me. I really didn't care for the tone early in the debate and that just soured the rest of it for me.

  • I also only watched part of it, but... I thought Schieffer was the best moderator by far. McCain performed better and came off as less angry-old-man, and I liked when he emphasized small government. I think Obama could've come off stronger but I liked that he didn't dance around the issues. In the Roe v Wade question he actually talked about his views on abortion and McCain didn't.
