Anxiety over flying

Does anyone else have an extreme fear of flying?

My dad and I just bought football tickets to an away game that will require us to fly, and even though it is a month away still I am already getting anxious about the flight.  I'm talking stomach churning, chest tightening when I think about it.

anyone have tips to get you through flying without having panicy feelings.

Re: Anxiety over flying

  • I'm jealous, which game are you going to?

I flew for the first time since hs last year. It wasn't that bad, in fact, we enjoyed it. Since then we have flown home and flown for the HM. I think of it this way, despite the threat of terrorist attacks or whatever, the risk of dying in a plane crash is a lot less than in a car which you drive everyday.

I just bring a good book and/or music and relax. The only parts that get me is the take off and landing which I just hold on tight and put my body back in the seat.

You could try asking your doctor for some medicine, too.

  • i love flying but H hates it. our HM was his first time flying and he did not enjoy it at all. i'm not sure that i can get him on a plane ever agian (bummer).

i agree with missy though - a good book or music or something to take your mind off of flying. H said that the movies they played while we were flying were a big help... so maybe a laptop or a portable dvd player and a couple of dvds if the airline isn't playing any movies.

  • I know exactly how you feel. I get sooo anxious when I know I'm going to be flying somewhere. I have panic attacks and nightmares and everything. But, I get on the plane because I love to travel and planes take me to my favorite places.

I always make sure to bring a blanket. I also usually get a margarita to help me relax a little bit. Read a book if it will distract you, but here is what really helped me more than anything else on our HM flight to Florida: If the plane you're on has TV, it is TOTALLY worth the $6 to watch. Watch 1/2 hour and hour long shows. After every show, you know that 30 min to an hour of your flight has already passed. I found an American's Next Top Model marathon and watched 3 episodes (they seem to go by really quickly).

  • I would also ask your Dr for something to take to help you relax. My father in law does that & he is actually willing to fly now.

  • Oh, I didn't know you could pay to watch the tv if they weren't showing a movie, I'll look into that.

Maine, I think I am going to ask my doctor about meds for future trips (I fly semi-regularly which makes my fear even more embarrassing) but this is a quick in and out and I want to be able to enjoy the game without being hyped up on pills :)

and Missy, we are going to the land of our fearless leader - Minnesota.

  • The in-flight tv depends on the flight- some have it some don't.  when they have it, it helps H to focus on something other than the flight.

He has panic attacks when we fly.  Honestly, the only things that helps him are alcohol or a little valium (from his doctor).

  • I grew up flying and until recently I was completely fine with it.  Then something happened and I kind of panic when we're taking off, landing or hit air pockets.  H has only flown twice and looks to me for my calmness factor to see if he should be worried.
For longer flights I take Ny-Quil and sleep through the flight so I don't have to worry about it.  For the shorter ones (like Boise to SLC that are 45 min tops) I usually take a book or my Ipod just to get my mind off of everything.  And chew gum like crazy because that helps calm my nerves for some reason.
  • I'll be at the Minnesota game too!!!!! I try not to miss the Buckeyes when they are in MSP.

I don't mind flying, landing makes me super nervous though.

  • Britt- I highly suggest a teeny tiny xanax- you won't feel (or act) drugged at all, it'll just make it impossible for you to freak out

Or- do yoga ahead of time and practice deep breathing/ meditation before take off.

but xanax = pharmaceutical gold, I'm telling you!
