Re: Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives
Donatelli's is AWESOME!! Seriously one of our favoriate places to eat. The food is great, the portions are gigantic and the prices are reasonable. Yummy. Now I want Donatelli's for dinner!
Best Cherry Coke I've ever had too. I have no idea what the heck they do to that stuff, but it doesn't taste like any other cherry coke I've ever had. I'd go there just for that. LOL.
I wouldn't recommend Al's- way too small for a comfortable breakfast imho. Modern Cafe is really old school but a little expensive imho (great food though- the ambiance doesn't match the prices). My favorite on that list is definitely Victor's 1959 Cafe. Cheap- authentic- great ambiance. www.victors1959cafe.com
The Blue Door Pub - AWESOME food.
The Nook - amazing Juicy Lucy
Dari-Ette drive in is on the "to do" list because its practically outside my window.
Donatellis - not sure if it is the same one as they had in Woodbury back in the day but if it is YUM.
I LOVE The Nook, I was there last Sunday. So good.
I have been to Donatelli's, but I'm not a fan.
Dari-Ette is in the neighborhood that DH and I grew up in. We love it! Go soon though, the are closed in the winter.
my read shelf:
I go to Al's Breakfast every once in awhile - I work about a block away. I think it's worth the experience. Sure, you have to sit on a stool at a counter, and probably wait for awhile to get a seat (there are only 14 seats I think ... it's tiny!), but the food is good and the staff can be very entertaining. The blueberry pancakes ("blues") are awesome. It's a crusty old place, certainly not new and shiny, but like I said, I think it's worth the experience.
Oh - and Al's is only open for breakfast/lunch, so don't try to go after 1 p.m. because it will be closed.
Mr. Sammy Dog
Donatelli's is the same that was in Valley Creek Mall in Woodbury. Good red sauce southern italian food. It's not a fancy place but the food is always good.
Did they move? The one I've been to is in White Bear Lake off of County Road E. I thought it was a small family owned business so I can't imagine they have more than one location? Maybe I'm mistaken.
Here is the website for the White Bear Lake one... http://donatellis.com/
The Dari-Ette drive in has amazing fried chicken and italian food! Went there for my first time last weekend, and was super impressed. It took a little bit longer than I had expected for them to take to get our food out to us (25 minutes), but I supposed it's because they make it all fresh. You can put in your order ahead of time as well!
The Weinery is also very good. They have all sorts of fun different styles of hot dogs.
I also like Al's Breakfast, but be prepared to wait, and you can't really go in a large group, since the whole diner only fits about 15 people tops!
Kramarczuk's is great - we don't eat there much but they have a huge deli section with amazing sausages and stuff.
And Victor's is delicious. We go for breakfast - I recommend going there on a weekday, weekends the line is crazy long.
Kramarcyzk's is awesome. I went on a tour there with a foods class when I was student teaching and we got to see their bakery and their smoke room in the back. The sausage counter is amazing, plus they sell a lot of breads. I go there more to shop than eat, but worth it for both.
Town Talk has "adult" malts that are good....all sorts of crazy drinks!
Al's is a dive and doesn't pretend to be anything but. It's an experience.
Follow Up:
I tried to go to Blue Boor Pub (will be on DDD Oct. 24) but it was TINY, had an hour wait, and no where to stand. I will try again another time because it looked and smelled great.
So we went to The Nook. My first time there. It was pretty much amazing! Probably the best burger I have ever eaten, not that I have a ton to compare it too. But it was great!
Now I can't wait to try the rest of these on the list!
Thanks for posting this! I've always wondered which MN restaurants that show has featured and now I have a list. I'm going to post it in our kitchen so that when DH and I are looking for some place new to try, we have something to refer to. Although I've been to Colossal, Al's and the Nook already. We've tried the Blue Door Pub a couple times, but it's been so busy and I'm not much for waiting. Saw the segment on YouTube for Victor's and The Modern and really want to try them first.
Thanks again!
LOVE the Nook. We eat there every time we are home. Twice, if I get my way
I grew up going to Donatelli's every Friday night after football games (I went to Mahtomedi) and it was always good - so I was really excited when it made the show!
