Vinegar in Laundry

Hey everyone,

I've heard that vinegar can be used to whiten whites and I want to try it on my H's undershirts/socks/etc.  Have any of you ever tried this?  How do you do it?  I've read that you can either soak clothes before washing them or add it to the rinse cycle, but don't which would work better...Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks!!

Re: Vinegar in Laundry

  • i use vinegar in the rinse cycle instead of using fabric softener.  it works well for that.

vinegar doesn't whiten clothes...... if your goal is to whiten them, you should use hydrogen peroxide or non-chlorine bleach.

  • To whiten your whites with vinegar... i put two tbsp of baking soda and one cup of vinegar and set the pre soak on my washer, then wash as usual afterward. a few extra steps but theyre alot brighter than washing with clorox .hth

The reason it gets clothes cleaner and softer is that it takes out the soap, and consequently the soap scum.

My late mother used to said that vinegar "cuts" soap.

When I get too much in the washer, I'll dump in some vinegar to cut some of that excess.
