pet owners- cleaning carpets

Okay so my husband and I have a 1yr old dog that of course we adore. However, we've never owned a pet before so it has been a suprise on what kind of damage this cute little girl can do to our carpets.

She's had accidents I dont know how many times and on rare occasions has found herself a pen to distroy. For those of you have had ink stains on the carpet- I'm sure you can imagine how hard it is to clean...ugh.

Anyways although I treat the carpet and clean it every time a single incident occurs, the stains somtimes come back up and there are some areas where cleaners have made the carpet appear bleachy. Even when she doesnt have an apparent accident, the carpets overall just appear in bad shape.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've started to put her in her kennel to prevent further issues, but do i just nee to rent a stinking carpet cleaner or are there other ideas? I was reading the small print on my Resolve carpet cleaner can the other day and it talks about how to clean large areas, like a whole room...has anyone done it that way?

Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: pet owners- cleaning carpets

  • My husband and I went through the same thing -- it's amazing how much damage a puppy can do to your carpet! We owned our dog for one year (we used to live in the midwest where its grassy but moved out west where its a lot of hot asphalt) ... and we had no idea how much dirt/black asphalt a little dog could bring in out here! It took me about a year to realize what I was doing wrong ... it started out with little spots here and there (because we were spot treating with spray) but by the end of a year our carpet as a whole, had become 2 shades darker (Thankfully we are moving in 2 weeks, so we will get a fresh start with new carpet!)

Other than immediately using resolve or other spot/stain treatment after accidents (which we always did), get a solid, quality vacuum cleaner (I made the mistake or using a weak, Dirt Devil for a year -- but I then moved up to the Dyson Animal) which will truly suck up the dirt weekly, then rent a shampooer once every 4 months (or at least once each 6 months) or hire someone to do it. I tried that foam Resolve heavy traffic spray (the kind that's supposed to clean your whole carpet) but found it more or less ineffective -- a professional shampooer is much more effective.

Also, we now keep a stack of babywipes near the doors so that each time our dog comes in (before we were doing warm water and papertowels), we give the paws a quick wipe (this advice was courtesy of our neighbor) and that has really made a huge difference with regard to our carpet and furniture! Good luck!!

  • Make sure you are cleaning up the accidents with a cleaning product that will break down the enzymes so that the puppy doesn't smell the spot & think its ok to go there again. I second using Nature's Miracle! When we had carpet we would use Nature's Miracle first and then baking soda/vinegar to get the stain out (sprinkle baking soda adn spritz it with vinegar, let it sit for a little while, then vacuum up).
