obvs here in the good old US of A books are not banned by the feds, but yay for celebrating those that are challenged and censored.

the "classics" that always end up on the re-consideration lists never shock me because most Literature has heavy (ie adult) themes, but "Brown Bear, Brown Bear"??? hahaha ridiculous.
what is your favorite "banned" book?
Re: It's Banned Books Week!
Some of my all time favorites are on the banned list:
To Kill a Mockingbird
Little Women
A Wrinkle in Time
Are You There God, It's Me Margaret
The Great Gatsby
Harry Potter
I could keep going...
And seriously... A Light in the Attic??? Brown Bear??? Are these people smoking crack? Sigh.
I had a conversation last week with a TEACHER about why it's okay for kids to read Harry Potter. She thought it was about witchcraft, so it must be bad. REALLY?? And as it turns out, she HADN'T EVEN READ the books! After I summoned the strength not to strangle her from across the table, I (slowly using little words) explained to her that it is good versus evil and good wins. Magic is merely a vessel. She decided maybe she'd pick one up and read it to see. GAW!
I want to reread several of these books (and more) again. We should have a book club to go with the wine club

I was surprised with Brown Bear, Brown Bear too- and especially the reason why- crazy!
My favorite banned book would have to be Catcher in the Rye. It's been a long time since I read it but I've always loved that book.
Seriously, Brown Bear, Brown Bear banned? Wtf? What an ridiculous theory.
I know a lot of people that hate it, but my 2 favorite books that we had to read in hs were The Great Gatsby and To Kill A Mockingbird. Not to mention I love Roald Dahl as an author as well.
I also love the HP books. I still need to read the first 3...along with all the other books I have waiting for me to read right now. There are so many good messages in her books besides good vs evil, like friendships, doing the right thing, etc. I would definitely let my pre-teen read them.Oh wow... I remember reading that!
And did you know that shortly after 9/11, a boy was detained in an airport for having a HP book?? Srsly. Ridiculous. Spells = bombs? whatever.
HP books have great morals. Like deciding if you should do what's right..or what's easy.
And really, when it boils down to LOVE is what saved Harry, how can that be bad?
It's almost here! Weeeeeeee!
my read shelf:
43/70 books read
Back in June 2010...
I'm pretty surprised with Brown Bear, Brown Bear and A Light in the Attic. I think I still might have a copy of those books stashed at my mom's house.
My favorite banned book is Beloved.
ETA: How could I forget The Color Purple? One of the best books I've ever read.
A Light in the Attic is banned? Seriously?
I actually find one of the most surprising the Diary of Anne Frank. Yup, that's smart, let's censor history.
I have a bunch of favorites on the "banned list", but I like horror movies & books so I get why my list would be long LOL.
A Clockwork Orange (lovelovelove), American Psycho, Animal Farm, Flowers in the Attic, Christine, Flowers for Algernon (was BANNED?! WTF??), Lord of the Flies, Night Chills, and on and on and on.
Planned Executed
Sylvester and the Magic Pebble?!?! Loved that book when I was a kid.
Same with Little Women - Diary of Anne Frank - and The Great Gatsby. This is interesting. I had no idea these books were banned, well, I am not surprised that Anne Frank was banned since some people still believe the Holocaust was fake - but that is a whole other story.
Right?! The problem is people judge them without reading them.

Woot woot! Lca, I knew you would think that book was fierce
We just have amazing taste in a lot of things. Books, wine, names for our dogs. Clearly the list could go on and on.
